About this listen

Steve Hobart is just a regular guy. Late one night, his world is tipped on its side as the dead began to walk. He slowly gathers a group of other survivors and, together, they brave the horrors of a Dead world. Every choice seems to yield as many consequences as it does rewards. He struggles with decisions made as well as opportunities lost as he finds himself in the unlikely role of leader. With a group that includes an Army doctor, a five-year-old Hispanic girl, a convicted murderer, and a teen girl who seems far better equipped to deal with the situation...Steve does his best to stay alive and one step ahead of the grasping hands of the walking dead....

This is a compilation of the first three books in the Dead series: Dead: The Ugly Beginning, Dead: Revelations, and Dead: Fortunes and Failures. Each special edition also contains close to 10,000 words of additional material requested by you...the listeners! This special edition allows you to sink into a Dead world with your favorite people and not be "distracted" by those long absences as other stories intrude and get in the way.

A Moving Tale with Depth and Heart

The first time I “met” Steve, the protagonist in this audiobook, was when I read the first three DEAD books in their original multi-thread vignette format. I’m still undecided as to which format I prefer. While I do enjoy the consistency of a single story thread, I liked the alternating version for other reasons. I liked having bites from each story thread – a mix of varying flavours of ambiance, characterization and pacing.

What I can agree on is that Steve’s story was entertaining in both formats. His is a tale of struggle and triumph intermingled with moments of sadness and loss, as we follow our protagonist facing the zombie apocalypse with both uncertainty and courage. He becomes the unexpected leader of a small group of survivors and the father-figure to some of the younger individuals amongst them - Thalia, Emily and I would even say Theresa (spelling? I don’t have the print book with me for reference).

His story is told with warmth, frustration and at times desperation and he is not immune to the dangers he faces either. It is a moving tale with depth and heart.

I was pleased with the narrator selected, whose voice matched the one for Steve in my head as I read. Andrew McFerrin reads with clarity, as well as good volume and pacing. He emotes well. I’m not as fond of his reading for the females in the book, who often come across as weak and a little ditzy, and at times Thalia sounds like a comedian’s version of a little old Hispanic woman, but overall I appreciated Andrew’s narration.

I’ve listened to a fair number of audiobooks in my day and this definitely matches the quality and professionalism of the better ones I’ve heard. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys the zombie horror genre.

Great Zombie Story with Amazing Characters

Where does DEAD rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a great book. I love the dead series but at times it was hard to keep up with all the characters. The author has done this series justice by creating a book for each groups story!! Love it. Its not hard to follow and I find myself caring for the characters more then in the original dead series.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a continuous story about one of the groups from the series. It didnt flip flop back and forth between 4 or 5 groups og characters..

Have you listened to any of Andrew McFerrin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes hes great.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I loved the whole book. I found it very relatable if I was to see myself in a zombie apocalypse that is. Lol

Any additional comments?

Great job.... I cant wait to read the next installment. I really enjoy the dead series this way. :)

Awesome!

Where does DEAD: Perspectives (Vol. 1) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For this type of book it would have to be pretty close to number 1, if not there

What other book might you compare DEAD: Perspectives (Vol. 1) to and why?

Wormwood Dawn series by Edward Crae. They are zombies, but just a twist different than "normal" I did like that in DEAD: Perspectives the mans dog was turned into a Zombie Dog, but then what happened to the other animals? Where in Wormwood Dawn they animals were slightly addressed too. most zombies books i have read or zombie movies totally ignore the animals. Would like to see more about the animals, but i have a few more books to get through in this series

Which character – as performed by Andrew McFerrin – was your favorite?

I love the little Hispanic girl and the girl that was found in the bathroom at the convenience store. Sorry i am horrible with names but i loved those two and how they grew thought the book.

Who was the most memorable character of DEAD: Perspectives (Vol. 1) and why?

Randall smith zombie was a surprise, loved the "Zombie Waterfall" comment. when Steve used a window squeegee lol!!!! I of course of Steve, the hispanic girl and the girl from the bathroom. Everyone else even when i like them well enough are just fodder :)

Zombies! The kind of moan you never want to hear!

I started this story with a subconscious assumption that I knew what the story would be. After all, the zombie apocalypse has been done over and over in recent years. Some attempts being better than others and each adding it's own unique variation on the theme. So I wasn't expecting much that would engage me beyond my desire to tag along with some characters in a scary thrilling world and see what happens. I have just finished the story, and can tell you the story was much more.

The main characters are realistic, with different personalities that grow and evolve over the course of the story. The relationships that are formed are realistically portrayed, some being tension filled and others tender and touching, exhibiting the softer side of humanity that emerges in this kind of life or death tragedy. The story illustrates well the trust and reliance that was essential for these people to develop in this new threatening world. All of these elements combined were enough for me to effortlessly make the mental transition into the story world and coexist with the others, feeding my suspension of disbelief.

I found myself engaged in the dialog and and easily got into the unfolding events along side the characters, so much so, that without really being aware of it, I had been sucked into the action to such a degree that when I had my back turned, my teen age son entered the room and belched loud enough for me to hear it as growl of a zombie filtering past my headphones and give my heart a jolt back to reality! Sheesh! Teenage boys....

I laughed out loud a couple times at witty banter and relatable "insert foot in mouth" situations between main character and his blundering attempts at surrogate fatherhood of a little girl as well as his male-esque lack of understanding when trying to interpret some of the responses he get's from the "fairer sex". The developing relationship between main character and his recently acquired little girl, with all her vulnerabilities and the terror of the world she finds herself in brought tears to my eyes on several occasions.

I can freely recommend this book to anybody looking to jump into a great story that promises adventurous tension coupled with human frailty, growth, tenacity and strength... even if you are not a zombie apocalypse groupie.

I was given this book in exchange for my honest opinion and unbiased review.
