Publisher's summary

Installing gravel or mulch is a very simple process.
If you have hardscape such as a walkway or patio, then the first step of installing gravel or mulch is clearing the area of any debris and spreading a layer at least two inches deep of either one. This will give rocks, pebbles, sand, and other materials something to catch onto and not just fall through.
Gravel is commonly used under driveways for cars because it can take more weight than other materials like sand, which only provides traction on top but does not have enough density to be stable along the ground's surface.
The next step is to position the pebbles, rocks, and other substance that you have chosen to use. Do not put too much in at one time or else the layer will be too thin and it may not hold together. Use your feet to move the gravel around so that a good bond can be formed.
A common practice of laying down a thin layer of gravel before applying a layer of mulch is suggested by companies selling and installing products for this purpose. The reason for this is that it helps add traction and stability to an area which is already muddy from water or chemicals being spread. Because of this practice, the area may not be as sturdy as an area which is not laid down with the gravel layer first.
Many people use mulch because it is environmentally friendly and makes an attractive look to landscaping, especially around flower beds. The mulch should be layered at least two inches deep and spread out evenly across the surface of the ground. This layer helps keep moisture in and also keeps weeds from growing underneath it.

Using mulch to create a barrier against weeds and plants is a useful method; however, it can also be used to help improve the appearance of a garden. Have you ever noticed that your garden's appearance much changes if you lay down some dark colored mulch? This is the same process used for making mulched flower beds. The darker color of the material helps eliminate most of the light, which might otherwise highlight certain branches, leaves, or flowers in your garden.
