The Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death. Flight Commander Lucille von Shard is an ace, a living exemplar of what it means to fly in the name of the Emperor… or so Propagandist Kile Simlex is told. Braving the foetid waters of Bacchus and its rampaging greenskin hordes, Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict portraying Shard as an Imperial hero. Publisher's summary
An Astra Militarum novel.
The hero of a series of short stories returns in her first full-length novel – and it's as grim, dark and brilliantly written as you'd expect from Rachel Harrison. Uncompromising and fierce, Commissar Severina Raine has always served the Imperium with the utmost distinction. Attached to the 11th Antari Rifles, she instills order and courage in the face of utter horror. The Chaos cult, the Sighted, have swept throughout the Bale Stars, and a shadow has fallen across its benighted worlds. A great campaign led by the vaunted hero Lord-General Militant Alar Serek is underway to free the system from tyranny and enslavement, but the price of victory must be paid in blood. But what secrets do the Sighted harbour, secrets that might cast a light onto Raine’s own troubled past? Only by embracing her duty and staying true to her belief in the Imperium and the commissar’s creed can she hope to survive this crucible, but even then will that be enough?

100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. Commisar
The best Commisar story since Ciaphas Cain. The main difference is this story is far more serious.

Great story, narrator was trash
Plenty of narrators struggle with opposite gender voices. But this was terrible to listen to. Some of.the male characters sounded like they had suffered a lung shot for the entire book. Cringe.

An excellent story of a traditional Commisar.
While I love the story and characters, and the narrator's performance was exemplary, I found this book a little bit of a slog. A bit too much of, 'he said, she said' style dialogue made it bothersome. that said, I've seen some of Rachel Harrison's newer stuff and that little problem has been addressed. I do hope to see more of Raine and her Rifles in the future, as I did very much love the characters.

Great book if...
... , if you're okay with single-narrator female-narrator.
Book is FIFTEEN HOURS long, so if it doesn't bother you - it gets better and better the further in it goes... but if female narrators doing male voices ain't your thing, well - its FIFTEEN HOURS long.
Great story, great performance, great example of how black library is picking up better authors to write real books.

Very Good story!
Very good story, well read. My only problem with it was how much it jumps around, but still very good.

Very intriguing.
The combat and intrigue are written well.
Maybe get a male VA to do the male roles in future.
Severina us a very different commisar to the other commisar main character I have read before (Cain) and you get that blatantly pointed out in the first chapter.
