Publisher's summary

The eagerly awaited follow-up to the number one New York Times best seller Hamilton: The Revolution, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new book gives listeners an extraordinary inside look at In the Heights, his breakout Broadway debut, written with Quiara Alegría Hudes, now a Hollywood blockbuster.

“[An] exuberant, unique, and invaluable record of dynamic, brilliant, and soulful creativity.” (Booklist, starred review)

In 2008, In the Heights, a new musical from up-and-coming young artists, electrified Broadway. The show’s vibrant mix of Latin music and hip-hop captured life in Washington Heights, the Latino neighborhood in upper Manhattan. It won four Tony Awards and became an international hit, delighting audiences around the world. For the film version, director Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brought the story home, filming its spectacular dance numbers on location in Washington Heights. That’s where Usnavi, Nina, and their neighbors chase their dreams and ask a universal question: Where do I belong?

In the Heights: Finding Home reunites Miranda with Jeremy McCarter, co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution, and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist of the Broadway musical and screenwriter of the film. They do more than trace the making of an unlikely Broadway smash and a major motion picture: They give listeners an intimate look at the decades-long creative life of In the Heights.

Like Hamilton: The Revolution, the audiobook offers untold stories, perceptive essays, and the lyrics to Miranda’s songs - complete with his funny, heartfelt annotations.

This is the story of characters who search for a home - and the artists who created one.

Critic reviews

“Ebullient.... What is most compelling is testimony about how this musical about a community ended up forging new communities and awakening a new appreciation for home in cast and audiences alike.” (Booklist, starred review)

I love it so much ❤️❤️❤️

Lots of hard work went into ‘In The Heights’ to produce such a legendary musical-‘In The Heights’ is the one musical that will remain on my mind forever- for what it represents and the sheer awesomeness of the songs and the story👍🏻

Great book with abrupt ending

I understand that a years-long story can’t predict when a pandemic might end, or have the perfect time to go to print, but why, after all the labor of love that went into creating In the Heights, did this get released before the movie? They talk at great length about the creation of the show, from its inception, through various iterations, to its global distribution, and a culmination of the movie, but it was mentioned several times that the movie had not yet been released by the time the book went to print. (Though there may have been an overlap with the audio book, as Lin talks about the movie soundtrack.) The very end of this book mentions Lin’s elation with Marc Anthony in the movie, but it comes across as a last-minute addendum, instead of a conclusion to the beautiful story they told. In that regard, it felt rushed, as though the printer was waiting for his last paragraph, and he just didn’t finish the book. The book felt incomplete and left me wanting more. (And needing an editor.)

Brilliantly Poignant

This is an amazing story. All of Lin's work is touching and this is no exception. America's narration is wonderful and having Lin and Quiara read their annotations and essays just brings it all home. Be prepared for all the feels - I laughed and cried throughout, so, have the tissues handy.
You will see yourself in this story because it's a powerful take on the human experience. We are all always looking for home, and as you'll discover in this book, "True community is possible, and it's precious, which means it's worth saving..." I think that's something we may have forgotten during the pandemic. But thankfully, In the Heights and it's beautiful, inspiring journey depicted so poignantly in this book are here to remind us that it's STILL possible if we choose it and fight for it together. Gracias y bravo!

Perfect for fans

It was so good to get the backstory of this musical. It has been with me for so long. Anyone who is a fan of this musical should listen to this book and get a deeper understanding of the origin. I really loved how it was red and presented by different people, little insights from everyone who was involved.

Good!

I really enjoy the backstory and the way the book handles the different versions of In the Heights, including the how and why of the stage vs movie storylines/ timeline. America Ferrera is good as the narrator and soo much better than the Hamilton book, with Mariska Hargitay. I also love how LMM sings and explains his notations on the libretto in this book, so much better than how it was handled in the Hamilton version.

If you love Hamilton and/or Heights…

The chapters read, rapped, and sung by Lin made this one of my favorite audiobooks of all time! I loved hearing the stories behind the characters and songs. I’m reading this back to back with Hamilton: Revolution and I actually preferred this book to that. I highly recommend this!
