Had room for Potential...

Hmm... I'm giving this book 3 stars overall, & if i could it'd be 2.5 stars but with narration I'm giving it 3, bc this book had room for potential & the general idea of the story and the main character was good, but it didn't keep me roped in all the way bc of how anti climatic events were and how chaotic the characters were in this first book with little to no development. I wish I could have loved Scarlets character a little bit more, but I didn't bc she was the biggest headache out of everyone in this book & I feel like the author just threw in a little bit of everything she wanted for a main female character and didn't keep Scarlets character as consistent as she should have. I loved the idea of scarlet being a strong badass, but the author made her like that only for anticlimactic moments that didnt tie in very well to the story. & I could go on about these little details about scarlet that felt so unreal for her supposed character but I would digress, anyways, like I said has potential, but overall was a bit of a headache just trying to keep up.

Oh- a young girl with light hair and eyes, who lost her parents gets taken in by an assassin lord, turns out to be powerful Fae, likes to read and play the piano?
Narrator is good but this is trying really really hard to be something it’s not.
I wish everyone would stop jumping on the SJM train and just make cool, different fantasy stories.

Best audiobook I’ve heard in years

I’ve read this book before & it was already one of my fav series of all time. This narrator does SUCH an amazing job with the characters, but the emotion behind them is what makes this one of the best I’ve ever listened to. I’m so excited for the rest of these audiobooks to come out for this series!!

Loved it!

This was such an interesting and engaging story, it keeps you guessing with the plot and what is going to happen with Scarlett! She is such a multi-faceted character!

So much potential

This story could have been epic. The world building, the story line, it was great but the FMC was sadly so disappointing. I seem to say this a lot lately, please don’t make a main point of the FMC be that she’s this feared assassin to only have her shutdown every single time something happens. The 1st of the 2 love interest became cringy and annoying and lost any purpose in being in the story. The MMC and the other characters in their circle were great and shows the authors ability in creating likable, relatable characters. I will read then next book as I have hope for the characters growth and I do like the authors writing style.

I can't wait for book 2

I loved the narration!! her voice is perfect.
I loved the story and the slow burn of passion and the slow reveal of all the truths. I'm curious what book 2 has to hold as the story continues.

the only issues I had are at time it was too slow. I lost interest but hung in there. and the fact that book 2 isn't available on audible... come on!

Enjoyed

This book is well written and brought me back to high school and YA books. You can expect typical tropes, but that’s what I enjoy reading. The FMC has great potential and I hope to see growth in the next book with her character. She is a bit of a spoiled brat, which can be fun. I am a huge fan of TOG by SJM, so it is a good book if you are a fan of the SJM universe. It is better than some of the other books I have read. I can’t wait to enjoy the rest of the journey.

A hidden gem

First let me tell you that the narration is some of the best I've heard. Laura Horowitz is now in my top 5 favorite narrators.

Next the story. It's unique and like nothing I've ever read. I normally don't read books where the heroine is in their teens (19 in this case). But the story sucked me. It's well written and flows well. There isn't a lot of "filler" like in other books where authors seem to just trying to get their word count up. I like the fact that the author let the female lead have true emotions and not some romantic fluff. The author reminds me of Grace Draven's writing in that aspect. She has created a unique world with a original spin on the Fae and their conflicts. Did it end on a cliffhanger as advertised? Yes, it did BUT the books are out on Kindle and I'm one of those that can read a book and then later listen to it. I look forward to reading/listening to more.

Bottom line: Worth the credit!

this book is *chefs kiss"

To all my Sara J Mass fans who loved Throne of Glass, get ready for this!!!!! the story is well written in a similar third person style and is Filled with swaggering royals, fea and vampires too! The voice actor is amazing and will keep you VERY enthralled! I definitely recommend this book and am so exited for the rest of this series (hopefully to come out this year according to authors instagram).
