Publisher's summary

Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler continues his wondrous Harbinger series in which two young women unite as two worlds approach the brink of war…

Though relations between Princess Seraphin Fitzempress and her father have been strained, Sera’s royal position has remained unchallenged. Filled with self-doubt, she struggles to grasp the Mysteries - her greatest trial yet.

An education in the enigmatic magic is a necessary one, should Sera plan to rise in her station and invoke her powers during war. But the emperor’s death now leaves both Sera and her ambitious father eligible for the throne - a contest the prince regent intends to win. Even if it means an alliance with a rival empire.

Sera’s hope lies in Cettie, a waif raised in the world below, whose life has intertwined with Sera’s in the most unexpected ways. The Mysteries come easily to Cettie, and her studies have begun to yield new insight into her growing powers. But those same powers put Cettie in the path of those who would destroy her.

Now as the threat of war ignites and an insidious sickness spreads throughout the kingdom, Sera and Cettie will need to gather their courage and fight for each other’s lives…and for the future of their endangered world.

Beautifully written and performed

I was once again sucked into the sequel, I listened to this one in just over a day! When ever I start listening to Jeff Wheeler books, especially with Kate Rudd narrating I can’t help myself. They are brilliant and pull me in. I love the stories and the mythology of the universe he has created. It’s truly captivating. I recommend giving it a listen.

Just as good as the first book - maybe better

This book is just as wonderful as the first, with the two extraordinary girls in a beautiful situation, but both pursued by their own special forms of heart-stopping danger.

In this second book of The Harbinger Series, Cettie, the orphan from the Fells, and Princess Seraphin have both managed to wind up as students at the Abbey of Muirwood where they have been studying for the past four years. They are getting close to graduation when they will have to undergo a final test. Seraphin, in particular, is worried about passing.

I had this book from Kindle Unlimited, so I also had access to the Kindle book. It helped to finish faster to have them both. Narration was good.

The perfect follow up to book 1

This story is so captivating, and extremely well written and narrated. It was the perfect follow up with the first book, I'm looking forward to the next!

Where the story should have started

While the first book in the series felt incomplete and rather dull, this book pick up the story and adds depth to the first. This book feels like the true start of the series.

Gorgeous

What a delicious start to the new story with echoes of Muirwood. Even better than I’d hoped.
One of my fav quotes:
“One of the strangest things about life is we are defined by our hopes as much as by our secret fears. We are for the most part the product of what we think about the most. “

Good but frustrating.

Still a great series so far, definitely getting the next one. But man there are so frustrating moments. You know before it happens that certain characters have made a terrible decision. I’m being nit picky though, definitely worth the read.
