Publisher's summary

Marilyn Monroe had the most famous face of the 20th century. A legendary actress, comedienne, and sex symbol, she has been one of Hollywood’s most talked-about performers ever since she first crossed the silver screen. Her fame persisted long after her tragic death—but as time has gone by, it has become almost impossible to separate the legend of the woman born as Norma Jeane from the truth.

Now, at last, Marilyn’s real story can be told.

Written in 1954, as she approached the height of her fame, this heart-wrenching unfinished autobiography provides the best possible glimpse into what it meant to be Marilyn Monroe. From its unflinching account of her desperately poor childhood to its firsthand look at the inside of the Hollywood fame machine, My Story gives us the Marilyn nobody else saw. As her story continues to be reevaluated and retold, including in the forthcoming Netflix biopic Blonde, starring Ana de Armas, this book is the key to separating fact from fiction.

Editorial Review

An intimate look at a silver screen legend
The image of Marilyn Monroe has become so entwined with the Golden Age of Hollywood, so foundational to Americana pop culture, and so symbolic of sex, glamour, and fame that, at times, the late icon’s humanity is lost to legend. In her tragically unfinished memoir, Monroe tells her own story, shattering misconceptions and offering a glimpse into a side of the star previously unseen or otherwise glossed over. In a voice as frank as it is warm, clever, and wise, Monroe explores surviving the traumas of a difficult childhood, navigating the exploitative side of fame and the wolves that lurked in the shadows, and the unshakable sense of loneliness that plagued her over the years. Releasing for the first time in audio 60 years after Monroe’s death, My Story is a self-aware, vulnerable look beyond the veneer of celebrity. — Alanna M.

The truth is sad

The reading was fantastic it seemed like Marilyn was telling you herself. Some parts were slow and repetitive, but necessary. The stories were sad and made me feel her pain for being a strong, independent, beautiful woman just trying to make it on her own terms.

True insights from Norma Jean herself

As if reading her diary- the reviews complaining of an abrupt ending should remember she died before her story was finished. Great tone, matching the realness behind the mask of Hollywood.

An Icons Personal view

Enlightening, raw, and interesting journey that I would have never guessed. I only wish the ending was more complete, but as with her life it is appropriate. Highly artistic.

Wow, where do I even begin with "My Story" by Marilyn Monroe? This book is an absolute gem, a five-star masterpiece that left me utterly captivated from start to finish.

As someone who's been inundated with Marilyn's legend through countless documentaries and articles, diving into her own words was a breath of fresh air.

What truly sets "My Story" apart is the intimate glimpse it offers into Marilyn's world, straight from the icon herself. Her voice resonates through every page, painting a vivid picture of her life, struggles, and dreams. It's like sitting down with Marilyn over a cup of coffee and hearing her pour her heart out.

The passion that radiates from Marilyn's words is palpable, especially when she delves into her love for acting. You can feel her dedication and determination leap off the pages, reminding us all why she became such an enduring symbol of Hollywood glamour.

But, oh, that ending! It hit me like a ton of bricks. Just when I thought I couldn't be more engrossed, it left me craving for more. Marilyn's story felt like it ended too soon, leaving me yearning for another chapter, another glimpse into her extraordinary life.

In a sea of Marilyn Monroe biographies, "My Story" stands out as a must-read for any fan. It's raw, it's real, and it's Marilyn at her most authentic.

If you're looking to get to know the woman behind the legend, grab yourself a copy of "My Story" and prepare to be spellbound. You won't regret it.

The ending was abrupt

I was surprised when the book ended. But I did appreciate Marilyn opening up about her harsh upbringing and loneliness. I had this one version of Marilyn in my head this whole time and I was dead wrong. I do hope to find another book that can talk more about her life after her marriage to Joe.

I loved hearing about Marilyn’s younger life and how she got to where she is after she married.

I was disappointed that the story ended with her marrying Joe DiMaggio. I would’ve liked to of heard what happened to her life after that?

Maryland tells a beautiful and sad story

I wish I would’ve known Norma Jean. I could’ve been her friend. Marilyn Monroe was a deep thinker and a wonderful person. Her beautiful person hood was lost on Hollywood.

I enjoyed it

Wouldn't it have been nice to have the rest written by a 70 or 80 year old Marilyn! To hear what the rest of her career could have been, and what she was like as a retired actress. Or maybe she wouldn't have retired but been like the great Betty White.
