About this listen

Jack Ryan Jr.--along with the covert warriors of the Campus--continues to uphold his legendary father’s legacy of courage and honor in this thriller from number one New York Times bestselling author Tom Clancy.

Privately training with special forces, he’s honing his combat skills to continue his work within the Campus, hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can--even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns to become President of the United States again.

But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and personal have just become equally dangerous. A devout enemy of Jack Sr. launches a privately-funded vendetta to discredit him and connect him to a mysterious killing in his longtime ally John Clark’s past. All they have to do is catch him.

With Clark on the run, it’s up to Jack Jr. to stop a growing threat emerging in the Middle East, where a corrupt Pakistani general has entered into a deadly pact with a fanatical terrorist to procure four nuclear warheads they can use to blackmail any world power into submission--or face annihilation.

Great Book.

Before we get started let me warn my liberal friends to look away. This is not a sight you will enjoy.

Locked On is the newest book in the "Ryanverse." For over 25 years Clancy has shared the history of Jack Ryan and company with us. In some ways this world is a parallel universe. Ryan experiences much of the same history, but he is there in ways that no true historical figure can be.

The book starts off a short time after Dead or Alive and continues the story from there. Jack Ryan, Jr. is now the lead character. Along with his cousin Dominick Caruso, and Ryan stalwarts John Clark and Ding Chavez he continues to track down terrorists as part of the clandestine "Campus." Jack Senior is running for President again against a leftist president more concerned with social engineering than truly defending the nation. Behind this president is a wealthy businessman from Eastern Europe who wants to bring socialism to full fruition in the USA. Of course none of these characters resemble any actual people living or dead!

In order to embarrass Ryan the president goes after John Clark, a man with a past. While Clark is on the run the rest of the Campus must track down a master terrorist and stop him before he carries out the most devastating terror plot ever launched.

If my liberal friends are still here I warned you, you will not like this. This book is full of the useful idiots, left wing politicians, left wing lawyers, left wing billionaires, et. al. who make up our society. It is just painful for some folks to look in the mirror.

Good action, horrible back story

Would you try another book from Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney and/or Lou Diamond Phillips?

Phillips is a competent narrator, easy to listen to. Some of his character accents are a bit heavy handed and cliché

Was Locked On worth the listening time?

Yes, if you keep your finger poised on the skip button

Any additional comments?

I used to love Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and Clark series. Somewhere along the way the story has run off the rails.

Clancy is known for his astute understanding, research, and detail of military/spec ops methods, tactics and equipment. On this aspect he still has the golden touch.

That being said, the backstory to this book lacks all understanding, research and detail of the American political dynamic. Its heavy handed and very simplistic Conservatives GOOD/Liberals BAD narrative reads like it was written by a fourth grade graduate of the Sean Hannity Glen Beck academy of political thought. It's a borderline scree with thinly veiled caricatures of real political and social figures that Clancy obviously doesn't like.

To hold my interest a good techno-thriller needs to be relevant and believable and this book really could have been a great listen if Clancy hadn't dumbed it down and loaded it with political bias.

Jack Ryan rides again. Lou Diamon Phillips=Great!

Would you consider the audio edition of Locked On to be better than the print version?

Haven't read the print version, but I cannot belie it could be better than this!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Locked On?

Lou Diamond Phillips just nails these charactors, he makes me duck for cover every time!

What about Lou Diamond Phillips’s performance did you like?

He is so talanted, clear precise charactors, hard to believe all these people are read by just Lou. He even gets the foreign accents right, his reading makes Tom Clancy's novels come to life. Well done Mr Phillips, encore, oncore!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Ryan, Clark and Chevez are back, stap on your body armour and hold on tight!

Any additional comments?

I just hope Lou Diamond Phillips keeps reading these Ryan series, I got away from Clancy for years but listening to Lou read one, and I'm hooked all over again...

Typical Clancy

Would you try another book from Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney and/or Lou Diamond Phillips?

Clancy does a better job when he writes the book rather than using Greaney. Phillips is a good reader.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I prefer real ending instead of lead-ins to the next book.

What three words best describe Lou Diamond Phillips’s voice?

Crisp, pleasant, and understandable.

Was Locked On worth the listening time?

It was a good yarn and worth the time.

Politics

Neh. Tom Clancy, before he died, wrote pretty good military thrillers. This title (written by by ghostwriters, no pun meant) is quite heavy on evil liberal foreign born billionaires and heroic right-thinking straight arrow politicians. A few bits of action, but the bloom is off the rose of the Clancy franchise. We listened to something more than half, but the many and tedious characters plus the politics wore us out.
