One More Hour

By: Sleater-Kinney
Narrated by: Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker

Publisher's summary

Sleater-Kinney’s co-leaders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein dig into 25 years of shared history-making music and making noise. Listen to this bold duo speak openly about the places, people, and movements that have shaped their career as well as the evolution of their creative and personal relationship. The bandmates and friends trace how their ambitions and their relationship have continued to inform each other and how they’ve navigated through the ups and downs for the sake of the band and their art. They move seamlessly through the different chapters of the band, sharing peeks behind the curtain, like the story behind their beloved autobiographical song “One More Hour”, which they wrote about their own experience breaking up as a romantic couple and finding their way back to each other as friends and bandmates.

They dive into their ongoing journey from their beginnings out of the Riot Grrrl scene in Olympia, Washington, to Carrie’s triumph with the TV show Portlandia, and on to their continued efforts to challenge each other and meet the political moment. It’s a deeply personal and exciting exploration of themes that have followed them throughout their career, like anxiety, activism, feminism, LGBTQ identity, motherhood, friendship, creativity, and change - all illustrated by evocative new recordings that’ll make you turn up the volume.

This entry to the Words + Music series features eight exclusive new versions of songs spanning the band’s 10-album discography (so far), from “One More Hour” and “One Beat” to “Path of Wellness”, and “Worry With You” from their 2021 album Path of Wellness

About Sleater-Kinney

Sleater-Kinney is an indie rock band formed in Olympia, Washington, by its founding members Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein in 1994. Their 1997 landmark album Dig Me Out earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time." During 2015, the band returned from a decade-long hiatus with the triumphant No Cities To Love, which landed on dozens of year-end lists, reaching #1 for The Daily Beast and The Skinny. In 2019, they teamed up with St. Vincent (another Words + Music artist) to produce the Sleater-Kinney album The Center Won’t Hold. Throughout their career, the band has sold out shows on multiple continents. They released their tenth studio album, Path of Wellness, in June of 2021.

Featured Article: Why Riot Grrrl Still Matters

In the early 1990s in the hazy fog of the Pacific Northwest, a movement was brewing. A gathering of women convened in Olympia, the capital of Washington State, to discuss the pitfalls that plagued their local punk scene—an environment rocked by sexism that was, at best, uncomfortable and, at worst, openly hostile to fans and artists who didn't mirror lineups dominated by straight white men. Whether Bikini Kill holds a prime spot on your playlist or you've yet to hear the drumbeat born from a woman oppressed, these listens offer a fully-fledged history of the riot grrrl revolution.

Yay. Whole songs too.

I once listened to another Audible music documentary and it only had snippets of songs. Hated that one. This is great. Going to see Sleater-Kinney tomorrow night in concert!

Riot Grrrl to Path To Wellness

Fans of Sleater-Kinney will love this short audiobook in which Carrie and Corin cover their highlights and lowlights of the 25 years of making music together, from the Riot Grrrl scene all the way to the creating and recording of their newly released album, Path to Wellness during Covid. Their personalities and strong bond to each other really come out in One More Hour.

In addition to the interesting band-related content, they chat about a number of other personal issues in each of their lives, including what they did during the band's ten-year hiatus. Among other things, Corin raised two children and Carrie created the great TV show Portlandia with Fred Armisen. They never missed a beat after reuniting - creating three critically acclaimed albums, and putting on great loud, high energy, live shows. I had the opportunity to see them absolutely rock a sold out Palace Theater in St. Paul in 2019. Their new album is fantastic and is in heavy rotation in my car and ear pods.

Also recommended for Sleater-Kinney fans is Carrie's memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. One More Hour is a great compliment to it. Oh, and One More Hour features a Sleater-Kinney song between each chapter, including two from the new album. Fantastic!

It makes me want to be in a band again!

I found their story to be inspiring and made me wish I continued with the band after high school. Maybe it's not too late...

<3 Slater Kenny

It was fun to hear from these music heroes of mine. My age, my kind of music, my kind of social, political, personal activism, and a group I’ve followed since they started in the early 90’s and college years and beyond! Great listen to their words and music. A lovely hour spent. Thanks!

Great look at band dynamics

My only criticism is that we don't need entire songs between chapters. Maybe just snippets?

Cant wait to listen to the records again.

Enhanced my appreciation of the music. Great to hear their voices.
Sure, would have liked Janet side of the story, but its not that. Thank you.
