This book is for you if you have any form of driving fear. This could be fear of learning to drive, fear of driving after an accident, or fear of certain aspects of driving such as fear of bridges, traffic, night driving, or fast-flowing roads such as dual carriageways, motorways, and freeways. Before we go any further, let's define fear. Fear is a natural, powerful, and primitive human emotion. Fear is better for us than most of us think. It increases the chances of survival when expressed in friendly ways. For example, when we find ourselves in a situation of real danger–like being faced by a robber in a dark alley–the fear reaction is just what we need. It releases adrenaline and other chemicals into our blood, and these speed up our heartbeat, sharpen our senses, and heighten our physical powers. These changes prepare us for what is called "flight or fight"–either to fight for our lives or flee. On the other hand, according to research, fear when suppressed or undealt can lead to anxiety and stress-related disorders.
Anxiety when driving, for example, can lead to the same release of adrenaline and other chemicals into the blood. The heartbeat will increase, our senses will sharpen and our physical powers will heighten. However, in this scenario, there is no need for "flight or fight."
