Publisher's summary

Chris Dorner was a cop with the LAPD who was fired after reporting that his training officer beat up a handcuffed, nonresisting suspect. He appealed. Lost. Then snapped. In his manifesto that he posted on Facebook, he vowed to kill those associated with his being fired as well as their families. His first victims were the daughter of the LAPD lawyer who represented him and her fiancé. This recent case from 2013 includes some graphic scenes, including the all-out manhunt for Dorner and his controversial death.

This is the first book in the Recent True Crime Cases series by Peter Vronsky and RJ Parker, VP Publications, an imprint of RJ Parker Publishing.

It's a short book which actually touches on C.R.T.

The explanation of critical race theory is about the only redeeming quality of this book. Maybe, if a more enthusiastic reader had narrated, it would have ranked higher?

PREFACE:
DORNER'S ACTIONS WERE TERRIBLE.
What led him there, equally as terrible.
And not much changed, probably because he chose to kill.
I grew up in O.C.and L.A. If I had a penny for every time I put my 5'4" 100lbs white body between a person of color and a racist person, I would be rich.
I also have a son, diagnosed with a severe neurological condition. POC and the neurologically impaired community have often come together to advocate against the brutality and discrimination we live with every day. The LAPD has always had well intentioned, compassionate and, unfortunately silent officers. And, they have a pretty regular collection of sociopathic folks, whom are over protected and result in many millions being paid out in settlements. I advocate for better. I do not hate the police, nor do I idolize Dorner. I do understand both.

Dorner's well intentioned family lived in Cypress, CA. A city that was about as white as possible. Chris would have lived with racism all around him. Trauma starts there.

There is so much more to this story, that could have been covered, like PTSD in military vets. And the VAs history of ignoring this area of need. Vets have a lifetime of unique circumstance, which requires competent military savvy interventions. These were non existent in Dorner's day.

The LAPD is infamous for violence against people of color as well as neurologically impaired people. To read the highlights and to witness this are two very different things. Today, the focus is on deaths. You'd be surprised, the level of brutality these people live through. Dorner's brave decision to speak up, prior to massive protests, is reflective of his moralistic devotion.

The refrences to seriously mentally ill mass shooters in this book only perpetuates discrimination through regurging media hype and stereotypes. Juxtaposed with the competently described Critical Race Theory, my head spun. We have a super broken mental health system, which actively denies federal funding for people between the ages of 18/21 and 64 yrs old. LA's Twin Towers jail serves as the largest mental health facility in the COUNTRY. We have mastered the criminalization of seriously mentally ill people. The bulk of the rest of this population, resides on Skid Row. Cops are NOT doctors. Jails are not hospitals. This is a problem.

And let's actually give a nod to the absolute lack of cultural awareness in every area of medical and mental health? Chris Dorner never stood a chance to recover from his ails. And his plight to right the plethora of wrongs, from a 2021 perspective, was destined to leave him completely beaten.

Given what we know in 2021, Chris Dorner was fighting an understandable war in the most wrong of ways.

Serial killer and racism

This book was different from what I expected. It was straight forward and dry, it could have benefited from more description and information on the story.

An important story that deserved a better effort

I knew about Chris Dorner and the large manhunt that ended in his death, but only recently learned that his termination from the LAPD was linked to whistleblowing activity around excessive force.

The telling of Dorner’s story in this book is difficult to follow as the authors do not provide a chronological account and needlessly repeat details about Dorner’s life and his crimes. Towards the end, the authors inappropriately try to juxtapose Dorner’s case with that of recent mass shooters and other high profile police cases. The latter portion of the book seems poorly researched and is thrown together like it was sourced from Wikipedia.

The narration is overly dramatized and performed in a halting style of diction that makes for an unpleasant listening experience. It was sometimes unclear when the narrator had transitioned to reading excerpts of Dorner’s manifesto.

In sum, this story deserved better.

An important story told poorly

This was a really badly written book, and while the audio version wasn’t any worse than the book, it couldn’t rescue it.

Badly researched, lacking in content, and basically not worth the time or a credit.
