Publisher's summary

There are millions of stories in the city - some magical, some tragic, others terror-filled or triumphant. Jonah Kirk’s story is all of those things as he draws listeners into his life in the city as a young boy, introducing his indomitable grandfather, also a "piano man"; his single mother, a struggling singer; and the heroes, villains, and everyday saints and sinners who make up the fabric of the metropolis in which they live - and who will change the course of Jonah’s life forever.

Welcome to The City, a place of evergreen dreams where enchantment and malice entwine, where courage and honor are found in the most unexpected corners and the way forward lies buried deep inside the heart.

;Part average kid, part imagination, part mystery

There are a lot of characters in this book. That is what it is mostly about; a child growing up, his family, his nightmares, his adventures, his friends. It doesn't become a "story" until about 3/4 through. It was good enough to finish it, but I have enjoyed character stories better.

A Coming of Age Story Koontz Style

This is not an edge of your seat thriller, as some of his books are. Nor is it steeped in supernatural wonder or aliens. There is no definitive "hero" of the book. Instead, a city of people who do extra ordinary things both good and evil. A story within a story within a city of people with their own stories. Unlikely friendships formed for good and evil and a telling of the story in a way that only Koontz could get away with.

The narration was done wonderfully by Korey Jackson. I would listen to his narration again.

If this book was written by anyone but Koontz, I would not have enjoyed it as much.

Amazing!

This book was riveting and addicting! From the moment it started, I was completely swept into the world of the characters! The book was written from the perspective of a kid who learned more and more about the world around him. Absolutely amazing! I couldn’t put it down.

Excellent story

Very different than "normal" Dean Koontz fare and oh so good. Love every aspect and have listened probably 10 times. Never tire of the story, the excellent presentation and the bit of history of my formative years.

Expected typical Dean K story

Struggled to finish it, it had a few exciting moments just not enough to keep my interest.
Performance was ok, not a big fan on how it was narrated.

engaging & thought provoking, A new favorite

loved the story line. moved a little slow in the beginning, but the build made for a deeper connection to the characters. Just the right amount of foreshadowing. I was still surprised by some turning events. highly recommend.

Different

It's a great book in a different style. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Buy it, I think you too will enjoy the story of the Bledsoe family.

Phenomenal

The narration was engrossing, the story rich and captivating. At the end, I was sobbing with something like hope and gratitude.
