Publisher's summary

Meet Grant Matson: lawyer, father, suburbanite husband who awakens to the fragility of modern society and embarks on a personal journey that introduces him to a world of self-reliance and liberation. 299 Days: The Preparation, the first audiobook in the 299 Days series, depicts the inner struggles Grant must face as he exists in a social system he recognizes as unsustainable and on the verge of collapse, but one in which he has built his life around. What begins as a return to his roots, self-sufficiency and independence, becomes a full blown move to prepare for what may come.

Engaging, insightful, and a bit suspenseful, follow Grant's transition from a self-perceived "sheeple" to a full-blown "prepper". Will his fears come true? Is he an extremist? What if nothing happens? What if something does?

Excellent book

I greatly liked this book. I am an avid fan of these types of stories and like the ones that are not totally end of the world for a change. A must try.

299 Days provides a real look at today's world.

This story is written in a guy's voice, be prepared for some language, a little heavy on gun tech talk.

Great background that is needed

What did you love best about 299 Days?

You need a bit patience and background if you are planning on absorbing a 10 part series. I almost followed the guidance from other reviewers that indicated that this book was slow to start, not worth the time. I certainly am glad I didn't heed the warning, this story and background is needed and well worth the time. Kevin Pierce does a great job narrating and giving the feeling the story needs.

What was one of the most memorable moments of 299 Days?

How pissed off I get at the weannys and their warped sense of entitlement! Truly impressed by the authors ability to articulate common thought processes that have been manipulated by years of entitlement and taking from others, "better that others". This only gets better with each book....

Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?

From the ones you hate, to the ones you learn to love; Kevin does a great job!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Spending more than we have has consequences. Are we in another bubble?

Essential

Everyone should read/listen to this book. Disasters happen all the time and being prepared will put most people's mind at ease, it's not a matter of if but when.

Great...Just a little slow getting started

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This guy has an insight not shown by other books of this kind. It is a little slow to take off, but it builds a very solid foundation for the rest of the series. There are also some good lessons about reasonable prepping that are interesting. I'm looking forward to the next book!

It's in the details!

299 Days brings plausibility to the genre. Unlike many "dystopian" adventure novels where outside forces such as EMP's, viruses, or meteors put an end to The world as we know it, this novel describes the beginnings of a very plausible vision of what could happen in the future. A "partial" collapse of the government/economy leading to nationwide lawlessness which up to now has only existed in very limited geographic areas after events such as Hurricane Katrina and The LA riots following the acquittal of the Rodney King police officers.

The author does a very good job describing how a pudgy lawyer comes to the realization that he needs to start preparing for the worst. His struggles with getting into shape, keeping his "prepping" a secret from his wife, and his eventual discovery and befriending of likeminded individuals hits home for those of us who have experienced the same thing.

The slow buildup and detailed exposition are great. I've started to recommend this book as a good first foray into the ideas behind the philosophy that it doesn't hurt to put in some effort today to be ready for an uncertain tomorrow. 299 Days describes how a regular Joe becomes an accomplished prepper. Can't wait to start part II!

Great “real” fiction

The story is very well based on a more likely scenario
for a cause of a shutdown and survival.

Better than I had hoped!

I happened upon this series while looking for Prepper Podcasts. When I listened to the Prepper 2.0 Podcast by Glen Tate and Shelby Gallagher — I was HOOKED! They take a very common-sense, every-day-Joe outlook on reasonable prepping. They both stated that there was a book series out by each of them, so I gave Glen's a try first. It was a great story, with level-headed characters who behave in relatable ways. The narrater was one I was familiar with from another prepper book series, so I was pleasantly surprised. His tone, pace, and intonation are perfectly suited for the genre.
This book almost reads as a how-to guide for getting more prepared — just in case. On another note: I'm LDS, so I was happy that we got a nod from time-to-time that didn't treat us as extremists, weirdos, or outsiders — just fellow citizens and preppers. I appreciate that. Looking forward to the next book in this series, then on to Shelby's once I finish this up.
Keep up the great work Team!!
