A young woman is in love with a successful surgeon, a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing. His mistress, a free-spirited artist, lives her life as a series of betrayals—while her other lover, earnest, faithful, and good, stands to lose everything because of his noble qualities. In a world where lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and fortuitous events, and everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. The year is 1979. The Iranian Revolution is just around the corner, as is a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse. Meanwhile, in the northeastern city of Naishapur, a retired judge and his wife, Bibi, run an ancient orchard, growing apples, plums, peaches, and sour cherries, and looking after several generations of family members. The days here are marked by long, elaborate lunches on the terrace and arguments about government corruption and the rise of religious fundamentalism, peppered with tales of ancient Persia that foreshadow the seismic political changes to come.

What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days, as New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology.

Growing up in a quaint mountainside village in Japan, Seido Oda spent his boyhood fishing in clear mountainside streams and helping his parents run their small inn. At the age of 11, Oda is sent to study with the monks at a nearby Buddhist temple. This peaceful, quiet refuge in the remote mountains of Japan becomes home for the introverted monk - until he approaches his 40th birthday and is ordered by his superior to cross the ocean and open a temple in Brooklyn. Ripped from the isolated, serene life of his homeland temple, Oda receives a shock to his system in New York - a motley crew of American Buddhists with misguided practices.

Story
It is the story of a boy growing up in the war-torn Jerusalem of the 40s and 50s in a small apartment crowded with books in 12 languages and relatives speaking nearly as many. His mother and father, both wonderful people, were ill-suited to each other. When Oz was 12 and a half years old, his mother committed suicide - a tragedy that was to change his life. He leaves the constraints of the family and the community of dreamers, scholars, and failed businessmen to join a kibbutz.

Beautiful Story
Any additional comments?
This story is beautiful. Prose is both evocative and informative.
I strongly recommend reading this before traveling to Vietnam! Something for everyone: art, history, war stories, food, love and relationships...
I had intended to read it before leaving for Vietnam, but ended up starting it while I was there. Luckily, I started just in time to learn how to correctly eat Pho and impress the family hosting us. (several raised eyebrows and surprise!)
Based on conversations I had with our hosts and with our guides, students and other locals, I sensed that the way the Vietnamese people felt about Americans is accurately portrayed in this novel.
There were several points in this story that my eyes stung with tears, but the ending truly got me. I listen in the car, and the ending had me sobbing while I sat at a stop sign. Not because it was heartbreaking and sad, but because it was so perfect.

A book I won't forget
This book was quite beautiful. It provided a window into a place and time that is generally viewed through the lens of stereotype. The story was interesting, but the characters were the strength of the story.

deeper view of this wonderful country and its peop
As a Canadian who was barely aware of the American war in Vietnam, visiting that country was an extraordinary experience without the emotions experienced by so many of the Americans we met there. (we were on a conference for a week, then on our own for two) This book transported me to many of the experiences I'd had but took me much deeper into the relationships and thoughts of the people. I could almost taste the Pho. Grateful for this emotional trip through time and art.

Layers of Vietnamese culture in lovely story
This book was great for a combination of a Viet story between characters you love, while peeling back layers of history. Made you understand the complexity and nuances of the culture with it's heartbreak and heart warming characters!
The narrator is also phenomenal, pull you into the book even more!
