Publisher's summary

Before wizards, the races of magic held the power...
and enslaved humans.

Ian and Vic are brothers. Their lives are simple, and while they might long for excitement, happiness can be found in a hard day's work, a sunny day, or the smile from a pretty girl.

Their lives are turned on end when their village is attacked and they are taken as slaves, destined to labor under the watchful eye of their captors.

The strife that had long dominated much of the world had found them.

Things would never be the same.

Listen and discover how the first wizard came to be.

From international bestselling author Jeffrey L. Kohanek comes a fantasy epic filled with twists, magic, and discovery, certain to keep you enthralled and repeatedly saying "just one more chapter."

Slow but brilliant

Have to say Pavi is one of the best narrators of this genera of LitRPG and epics, his tonal range and voice changes are epic.
Keep up the good work!!

The story is amazing, it is a wee bit slow but the world building and the involvement of the characters is top notch. Can’t wait for the second book to see where they go and how they progress!
Way worth the credit!

Decent

It was decent enough for me to finish the story and kept me interested enough to understand what was going on. The MC of the story had a little bit of an arc where you can see the growth in him beginning to take on a more leadership as he’s being pushed to the forefront of the story , but that was about it. I don’t believe that I will move onto the next book in the series, but it was at least decent enough to listen to.

Great author at it again

Incredible world building as always, definitely read this. I read this after the Wizardom series and felt like it falls into good timing that way.

Great 1st book

I really enjoyed the process and journey. The story evolved well. Some of the situations seemed forced. Like of course there is a prison break…. But it was good. I enjoyed the story and narration

The story is slow to begin, gets AWESOME

In the beginning, it was kind of difficult to understand the intro, I was kind of lost, then I was expecting lots of magic and adventures but it turns to be a little bit of drama instead. However, all the events turn the story into a very well-developed world that interconnects without fail and explains the facts in detail.
I loved the story and could not wait for the second part.

A fun story that continues to grow

A well written story that has some fun twists and turns. The performance seems a little rushed during the prolog, but becomes a comfortable story to listen to after that. The author has created some original twists, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I recommend listening to it.

Main story takes TOOO frickin long to start!!

Overall the story was ok, but the MC takes ENTIRELY too long to become a "wizard". Literally didn't get magic until like the last hr of the story. His magic seems pretty lame too tbh. If you're going to write a book about the first wizard, how about giving us SOME WIZARDRY! I'm on the fence whether I'll even bother with the second book. At least in that one I won't have to wait 14+ frickin hours to see the MC actually be the MC. Would definitely not have bothered with this book if I knew this ahead of time.

Disappointing for me.

Tbh the concept of a story about the first wizard ever was a concept I had thought of in the past but, this book did not do it justice for me.

I will say this book was well written, but I didn’t like how it was told. First off, I don’t enjoy stories told from multiple characters perspectives. I prefer books that are solely the MC’s perspective. I don’t mind brief jumps to different characters to enhance the story but, otherwise, it just slows down the story for me.

Secondly, I honestly thought the book would be more about the MC discovering his wizardly gifts, instead it was mostly about the events leading up to him discovering that he has potential for something more. For me, it made for a very boring book. On top of that, I found it kind of silly that at the end of the book, the MC finds a master to teach him about his capabilities. This pretty much made the title of this book feel like clickbait rather than true to form.

Finally, I just didn’t particularly like any of the characters. I couldn’t decide if MC’s older brother was a muscle brained Chad, or an intelligent and thoughtful older brother. The thief girl introduced later in the book just annoyed me. There was one scene where she basically asked for bed chamber fun time with MC’s brother in exchange for her help. I just couldn’t get over the fact that if she were a guy saying that to a girl character, the reaction wouldn’t have been the same. It was borderline (nonconsensual hanky panky word here) if you ask me. Aside from these characters, pretty much all the other characters were just so normal that the overall interactions were painfully average. I would have loved to see some more quirkiness in the characters.

Overall this book is a no go for me but, there may be plenty out there that might enjoy it.
