Publisher's summary

Best-selling author Brian D. McLaren followed his love of nature (specifically, tortoises) all the way to the Galapagos Islands. There, he paid close attention to the flora and fauna around him but also to what was happening within him, how the natural world awakened his soul in a way that organized religion could not. McLaren's descriptions of birds and reptiles, fish and flowers sing; he walks in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and grieves that Darwin has been demonized by his fellow Christians; and he reflects on how his own faith has evolved in the years since he left the pastorate.

McLaren writes in the spirit of Aldo Leopold and Wendell Berry, weaving together the spiritual and the material. Even though most listeners will never visit the Galapagos Islands, they can travel with McLaren and experience the beauty and fragility of this extraordinary place.

Surprise!

I chose this book in anticipation of a trip to Galapagos. I assumed the subtitle to be a clever editor's creative literary tool. The Galapagos trip is the author's creative tool and his book is an awesome spiritual journey. What a delightful surprise! It is beautifully written and read.

Very meaningful for me as I head to the Galapagos in a month and also to hear someone else speak what I have been thinking!

Beautiful insightful journey

I leave for the Galapagos in 14 days. I am so thankful I chose this book to listen to before my trip. I used to scuba like 30 years ago and the Galapagos was one of the dream trips I didn’t make. Now I am looking forward to once again visiting my friends of the underwater world and of course, making new friends. From this book I will bring an even deeper appreciation, understanding and love of the unique places in the Galapagos I am about to visit. If you love nature, the environment and its flora and fauna- listen to this book. You don’t have to be going to the Galapagos to love it.
