Publisher's summary

A young writer travels to Maine to tell the unusual story of America's longest-running camp devoted to mysticism and the world beyond.

They believed they would live forever. So begins Mira Ptacin's haunting account of the women of Camp Etna - an otherworldly community in the woods of Maine that has, since 1876, played host to generations of Spiritualists and mediums dedicated to preserving the links between the mortal realm and the afterlife. Beginning her narrative in 1848 with two sisters who claimed they could speak to the dead, Ptacin reveals how Spiritualism first blossomed into a national practice during the Civil War, yet continues - even thrives - to this very day. Immersing herself in this community and its practices - from ghost hunting to releasing trapped spirits to water witching - Ptacin sheds new light on our ongoing struggle with faith, uncertainty, and mortality. Blending memoir, ethnography, and investigative reportage, The In-Betweens offers a vital portrait of Camp Etna and its enduring hold on a modern culture that remains as starved for a deeper sense of connection and otherworldliness as ever.

Fantastic experience, informative mixed with intense.

Really felt immersed in the story and the author's experiences. My only complaint is that there were some Maine mispronunciations. :)

Best book about Spiritualism.

I loved this book! Very accurate account of life in a spiritualist community. I recommend anyone who wants to be a Medium or wants to know what it's like to be one, listen to this book. I love that so much history is included because it gives so much context. The storytelling is fantastic.

Annoying reading

I found the reading distracting. She did deep pretend man voices all the time- every character had their own voice. Idk why it bothered me so much but I just couldn’t pay attention and kept being distracted by the goofy voices.

No strings attatched

I love that the take away from this book wasn't to teach you how to be, but more on how it came to be. I appreciate the history and although not meaning to be to deep, this book this just that for me. thank you.

Made Me See A Medium

Interesting history of Spiritualism supported by the author's own experience. It took me forever to get through it, but I learned some things and even went to see a medium.

insightful view of American spiritualist

there was a piece missing from my recolection of Spititualism I knew as a child. I felt like a child blaming themselves for their parents divorce. the In betweens gave me those answers. maybe not the best answers but ones I can live with, and insight that will keep me from shaking my head at the changes coming down the pike. it was good to hear opinions of others about people I had known.
