Resumen del Editor

“Keyu Jin is a brilliant thinker.”—Tony Blair, former prime minster of the United Kingdom

A myth-dispelling, comprehensive guide to the Chinese economy and its path to ascendancy.

China's economy has been booming for decades now. A formidable and emerging power on the world stage, the China that most Americans picture is only a rough sketch, based on American news coverage, policy, and ways of understanding.

Enter Keyu Jin: a world-renowned economist who was born in China, educated in the U.S., and is now a tenured professor at the London School of Economics. A person fluent in both Eastern and Western cultures, and a voice of the new generation of Chinese who represent a radical break from the past, Jin is uniquely poised to explain how China became the most successful economic story of our time, as it has shifted from primarily state-owned enterprise to an economy that is thriving in entrepreneurship, and participation in the global economy.

China’s economic realm is colorful and lively, filled with paradoxes and conundrums, and Jin believes that by understanding the Chinese model, the people, the culture and history in its true perspective, one can reconcile what may appear to be contradictions to the Western eye.

What follows is an illuminating account of a burgeoning world power, its past, and its potential future.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Jin doesn’t ignore China’s faults and failings . . . she tells a nuanced story that deserves attention at a time of extreme tension between China and the United States.” —Peter Coy, The New York Times

“Jin avoids ideology and instead frames basic economic agents in the same manner as any other country. As a result, English-language readers will come away with a more informed and empathetic picture of this still-developing country.” Asian Review of Books

"The most important book on China in many years, written with stunning eloquence and clarity. Jin does not cover the warts, but insists on a holistic view. Anyone who want to understand China, and how to engage with it economically and politically, will greatly benefit from this deeply original book." —Kenneth Rogoff, Maurits C. Boas Chair of International Economics, Harvard University

flat intonation

Fascinating content but flat intonation makes listening unpleasant. Despite this, I still recommend the title.

Great Book

Very informative. It presents the China story from a different perspective. It gives a very good analysis of the economic rise of China with an objective view that is difficult to gain from western media. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand China politically, socially and economically.

Good analysis

Very balanced view of the Chinese success and vulnerability. A very not antagonistic approach unlike the mainstream media

Very informative analysis

Her vision for the world is idealistic and it’s a spin of the wheel if China will evolve in the fashion she envisions. While she is a very good analyst and very informative she sometimes seems to want two things at the same time.

Common Sense Optimism

It is refreshing to read a book that just makes sense -- cutting through the ideological propaganda that pervades the "free world" discourse about rival superpowers.

Excellent

A refreshing view that provides a much needed understanding of China, the Chinese government and the Chinese economic system. Much better and far more nuanced than the typical western propaganda.

Tell it the way it is from data and facts

Jin presented a very different view than what you read from the news media nowadays.

Nuanced and fair

Forging a collaboration hopefully will avoid a Thucydides trap.

I enjoyed the Explanations of provincial government, local leaders being responsible for budgets, as well as the slow trend to individual preference, and perhaps an openness to financial Capital flows will arise

Ok book on China

This was a decent book on understanding some differences between China's economy and that of the West. I thought the sections on the one child policy effects and the debt based vs equity based economies were interesting and gave a new perspective. However this books goes too easy on China and doesn't really address the elephants in the room with censorship and strict government controls.

The author said that a lot of international students return to China and do not stay in the US - this is because it is extremely hard to stay in the US and not because they want to return to China. The book also claims people can go after the government and win in court and social media which is very far from the truth. China has many pros like safety but during my time in China the constant surveillance and fear of saying the wrong thing about the CCP is very apparent. There is a reason why most people would rather live in the US vs China.

If you are looking for a book that provides insight into the China economy this is worth the listen but take it with a grain of salt. For a look into the CCP and the untalked about part of China control I would recommend the audiobook "Party of One"
