Publisher's summary

“Dying for freedom isn’t the worst that could happen. Being forgotten is.”

The long-awaited sequel in the best-selling The Things Our Fathers Saw series...

At the height of World War II, LOOK Magazine profiled a small upstate New York community for a series of articles portraying it as the wholesome, patriotic model of life on the home front. Seventy years later, a history teacher tracks down the veterans with a connection to “Hometown, USA” who fought the war in the air over Europe, men who were tempered in the tough times of the Great Depression and forged in battle. He rescues and resurrects firsthand accounts of combat and brotherhood, of captivity and redemption, and the aftermath of a war that left no American community unscathed. Here are the stories that the magazine could not tell, from a vanishing generation speaking to America today.

Matthew Rozell is an award-winning history teacher, author, blogger, and speaker. He has been featured as the ABC World News ‘Person of the Week’ and has had his work filmed for CBS News, NBC Learn, the Israeli Broadcast Authority, the New York State United Teachers, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

A Tremendously Good book

This is an amazing series. I have know WWII vets and through the ignorance of youth never talked to them much. This book does such a service to document stories of these men. The men, the stories and these books about containing these men's stories are a National Treasure.

Fantastic

For those of us trying to understand our father’s (or grandfather’s) war, the books are invaluable. I’ve been listening rather than reading, so miss the pictures, but the first hand accounts of what the people went through are both moving & chilling.

I continue to be forever grateful if Mr. Rozell’s work. These first hand stories of heroism, sadness, and country, keep alive the memory of those that made our country great. A sincere thank you to our heroes.

Only family is more important than history!

The authors subject in this book is so critical for today since history seldom leaves it's lessons in the minds of the next generation to learn from those who lived said history!

Loved this Book!

Enjoyed listening to all the stories.. and the book helps me to understand why my grandfather never talked about his time in Service of the Marines of WWII. This book is interesting and all generations should read or listen.

Great book, doesn’t glorify war. Tells it like it was.

These guys were just kids fighting a war for our freedom. Well done. Thank you for your service

Listen to their words

This series has been a bucket list for quite some time. This series is a must listen. The seasoned men interviewed are matter of fact with their words. The stories told are harrowing and unthinkable. This series of books should be a family staple and passed down to each generation. Listen closely and you’ll see we’re not that far away from this happening again.
Highly recommend.
