Publisher's summary

Lara has only one thought when her husband is taken prisoner: I will do whatever it takes to set you free.

A queen now in exile as a traitor, Lara has watched Ithicana be conquered by her own father, helpless to do anything to stop the destruction. But when she learns her husband, Aren, has been captured in battle, Lara knows there is only one reason her father is keeping him alive: as bait for his traitorous daughter.

And it is bait she fully intends to take.

Risking her life to the Tempest Seas, Lara returns to Ithicana with a plan not only to free its king, but for liberating the Bridge Kingdom from her father’s clutches using his own weapons: the sisters whose lives she spared.

But as Lara and her companions formulate a plan to free Aren from her father’s palace, they soon discover that while it is easy to get in, it will be quite another thing to get Aren, and themselves, back out. Not only is the palace inescapable, there are more players in the game than Lara ever realized, enemies and allies switching sides in the fight for crowns, kingdoms, and bridges. But her greatest adversary of all might be the very man she’s trying to free - the husband she betrayed.

With everything she loves in jeopardy, Lara must decide who - and what - she is fighting for: her kingdom, her husband, or for herself.

Great audiobook

The narrators are exceptional, the story has enough twist to be unsure of the end.

I'm happy with the ending albeit predictible. the drums after every chapter (?) were unnecessary.

Good - Depending on what you like

What is good - The story is interesting, I was pulled into book 1 very quickly. The scenes are set well and I could vividly picture the strange lands described in the books. I like the way the two main characters met and how their relationship grew and parried. There are some good subplots that make you ponder on what the right choices really are. What do you do when the only way to save those you love is to hurt others? How does one's character stand up to impossible choices?

Romance level - Kind of strange. I believe the author mostly does YA. This is new adult. Definitely some "R" rated scenes, but only a few between both books. As I was listening it felt like the author was almost afraid to write them, or testing the waters.

Narration and sound effects - Really good. I'm super picky about narrators; a bad one ruins the book and I definitely stop listening when they get on my nerves. This narrator was very good. Book 1 has a lot of storm sounds (lightening and thunder) and the beginning of chapters. This one has a bit of dramatic music. I liked the storm sounds better and wish it would have been consistent, but because the location and weather are literally different, I understand why it was changed.

Why only a 3 for story? - If it was a movie there would be places I would roll my eyes. Too much gore in the fight scenes to make the reactions believable. How does a 100 pound woman in a sand storm who can't see drag a 200 pound man through the desert? And come on, no woman is "in the mood for love" when she's been in a battle that left her sticky with the blood of those she's just killed, she has lost so much of her own blood she's dizzy, and she is trembling and woozy from from pain (actually, she's just waking from being passed out after her hero stitched up a deep knife wound.) The big O doesn't conquer that and it's more gross and disturbing than romantic. There were several scenes I just fast forwarded through.

Amazing!

I am always skeptical of audio books but these narrators did an amazing job! It was easy to tell whose point of view it was because Aeran had a male and Lara had a female narrator.
The story itself is amazing! One of the best duo loft finishers I’ve ever read, and I’ve read lot! I know there’s more books in the series technically but it switches to side characters. The story of Lara’s redemption is so good! It didn’t feel forced and while I caught the moment that was the turning point, it wasn’t confirmed until much much later. I legit had tears at the end! The characters are relatable and their story powerful! Great writing and great narration!

fast pace

not many books can have one of the characters a prisoner for half of it and still keep it so interesting.
for some reason I thought this was the last in the series and was in a crippling state of how is this going to end!?

BUT THERE'S MORE and thank the almighty because I need more of my king and queen.
