Publisher's summary

The acclaimed author of The Nanny, I Know, You Know, and Odd Child Out—"a writer to watch" (Publishers Weekly)—returns with another serpentine thriller that is a potent blend of atmosphere, tarnished memories, mystery, and twisty secrets from the past.

Bestselling mystery writer Lucy Harper's talent for invention has given her fame, fortune, and an army of adoring readers. It has also saddled her with dependents, namely her fawning husband Dan.

When Dan suddenly goes missing, his disappearance evokes dark memories that take Lucy back more than thirty years—to the day her brother vanished without a trace. That's when Lucy began conjuring stories. The police investigation revealed few confirmed details, so she created tales to fill in the gaps, to explain what happened that day her brother disappeared—and young Lucy was the only witness.

Now decades later, with the whole world watching, Lucy's past and present are colliding, and this bestselling author skilled in telling stories is losing control of her own narrative.

Where is Dan? What happened to Lucy's brother? And is the brilliant mystery writer—an expert in devising red herrings and hidden clues—revealing all she knows about both disappearances?

With twists and turns, Gilly Macmillan reveals the answers in this clever and compulsively readable mystery sure to thrill fans of Liv Constantine and Shari LaPena.

Flat - Boring Story - Shallow Characters

This audible was a chore to listen to. First of all, it drives me nuts that various characters quoted Lucy as being of different ages when Teddy disappeared. Dan claimed ten, Lucy corrected him at 13 and at the end, Eliza stated nine. Unless I am missing something, this is a MAJOR oversight. Details are important!

Otherwise, I found the characters hum-drum with no depth. I didn't engage with any of them. I found the main character irritating. Weird, disjointed ending and no resolution for Teddy (although, that is okay). Hated Dan. Hated Patricia. Hated the supporting characters. On a positive note, I did find the narrator to be excellent.

Not sure where all the positive reviews came from. I guess everyone has their own listening/reading tastes. Just not for me.

Good

I thought overall it was paced nicely and exciting. Not sure if some of it's offensive though? I'd be interested in hearing the perspective of someone who has multiple personality disorder.

Poor Teddy!

Are we expected to feel something for the irresponsible sibling that omitted important details to help find Teddy? This story got lost in itself, mislead the reader or thought we would forget the poor little brother lost to the selfishness of his sister. What a shame…

What happened to Teddy?

This was a very good book. I wish the ending was a little different! Love all her other books.

Well done

I really loved this book. I went into without expectations, and I’m glad. I really had no idea how it would end, and the journey was fascinating. The narrator was perfect for this story.

Terrific!

This was a great read. Terrific protagonist, kept me guessing. Every time I thought it was going to make a choice that sank it for me, it didn’t. Wonderfully complicated and unsettling. Best listen in a long while.

Excellent

I took a chance on this one as it was on sale, and I didn't have credits left. I will definitely read more by this author, listened into days. So worth the cost.

Wonderful Writing & Narration

I would listen to this book again and again solely for the beautifully crafted prose and expert narration. Lucy was such a vivid character, I felt as though I’d actually met her. Wonderful writing.

Wonderful story, ok narration

Engaging story that didn't lead you to where you might have expected given the unreliable narrator. I enjoyed the book a lot, but I found the narrator had a rather flat affect. Maybe someone thought it was appropriate for the character, but I found it annoying. Still a great listen, and not a very taxing story to follow along.

Such an engrossing story!

This book was a surprise and the story angle of an author was fascinating. I also adored Emma Fryer's narration and will look for more work by her.
