Publisher's summary

Matt and Liz may have retired from the police, but that doesn't guarantee a quiet life.

A deserted building. A face in the window. A face that shouldn't be there.

Photography student Toby Unsworth has found the location for the perfect night-time shoot. A cobbled street in the old part of Fenfleet. Later, when he looks at the images on his laptop, he thinks he sees a woman's face in the window of an old, disused building. He asks his housemate Alex to come and take a look . . .

Two days later, Toby and Alex are dead. Carbon monoxide poisoning. An unfortunate accident. But Alex's mother doesn't believe it. She hires Matt and Liz to find out the truth.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Simon is missing. He was staying with his Aunt Jessie in a cottage on the edge of the marsh. And his older sister Kellie is increasingly worried.

Matt and Liz's investigations reveal that something very big and very dangerous has descended on the small market town of Fenfleet. And if they don't get to the bottom of it, more deaths will follow.

Best Matt Ballard Mystery to-date 2022!

Best Matt Ballard mystery yet! Loved it. The story is super complex and fits together like a physical puzzel in your mind as you listen to each chapter. Youll have to slow yourself down abit as you listen to the story unfold because youll want to rush ahead. Just Great Joy! Thank you again...we love Matt & Liz❤️

Trick of the Night

I don't know if I was just not concentrating, but this book just didn't captivate me, like all the other series I have read from this author, Jackman & Fens, which I cannot put down. I have read the first Matt ballard series and enjoyed them as well. Perhaps I should relisten and do another review at a later stage.

Never disappoints!

There are enough twists and turns in this story to satisfy any mystery buff. A person doesn’t have to start at the beginning of this series…. But I think it is much more interesting to do so!

Decent but too many F bombs

I've always enjoyed Joy Ellis stories because they rely on intelligent language and good detective story telling, but this one had way too many F bombs and unnecessary sexual language which didn't have anything to do with the story at all.

Great Mystery

Love Joy Ellis stories. This was a great story right to the end. Will miss Matt and Liz and their sleuthing. Looking forward to the new books coming out.

Great story line that just kept you guessing!

The narrators voice was a little soft at times making it hard to hear the conversation. I was afraid of missing something !

Not as wonderful

Thought it was me. Or thought I had mistaken this author for another. Just didn’t quite have the appeal and ease of listening I usually get. I did finally connect with the story and characters and glad I listened.
