2023 Audie Award Winner for Best Short Stories/Collection Audiobook

“Speak your truth.” An icebreaker leads to unintended consequences for two strangers aboard a luxury yacht in this seductively twisty short story by the New York Times bestselling author of The Good Sister.

When Ella boards a sumptuous charter off the coast of Australia, she feels…dread. Her husband, Mac, the social butterfly who makes these wellness retreats so much easier to navigate, is stuck at work, leaving her exposed to the other passengers. Luckily, she forms an instant bond with the charismatic Chloe, a newly single woman salving a broken heart. But as the friendship grows, Ella discovers they share more than the need for an escape, and their devastating connection has the power to forever alter their lives.

Uncharted Waters by Sally Hepworth is part of Getaway, a collection of six stories about dream escapes that take unimaginable, even sinister, turns. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single sitting.

What’s with all the hate?

Personally I liked this book. I don’t really understand all the negative reviews. It was a good story, easy to read, and I liked the characters. The narrator was good as well. Yes there are some LGBTQ elements to the story but I actually liked that it’s not a man and women relationship it’s something different.

all over the place

didn't even mean to download, but listened to it anyway. story jumped all over the place. and didn't jump at points that made sense. I often couldn't understand who was talking. it also didn't make sense. with every meal a weird question, but then they all act like it's been asked before, but you still answer like you didn't know it was coming? very confused by this story. snarky answers for no reason? everyone gets a long, then they dont? this story isn't provided in a presentable way for a listener.

A quick listen. Great for a rainy day at the beach! Left me wondering what would happen right up until the end.

Pretty Good

3.75 out of 5 stars

I’ve said multiple times that I love a good short story. You have to introduce and wrap everything up in such a small window causes many authors to show off their best work. Some authors are better than others at it, but it’s always interesting to read how each one approaches it. I’ve never read anything from Sally Hepworth before this short story, so I don’t know how the rest of her work feels. But, I will say that Uncharted Waters hit on some aspects and missed on others.

I thought that the story itself was interesting. A getaway charter that this couple takes every year. A story about cheating and a revenge story all wrapped up in under 2 hours. Yes, please!

But Hepworth, unfortunately, did what some short stories do. They write a good story but one that felt like it needed the full-length book to fully flesh the idea out. Hepworth still did a great job writing a story that had heart and left me shocked at the end, which is commendable, but I wasn’t left feeling like, “wow, what a story.” I felt more like, “well, that was super interesting, but I wish I knew more. What’s next? Does this thing happen?”

I say this not fully knowing if Hepworth has plans to continue the story or the characters or not, but the story itself WAS good. Obviously, it was good enough that I wanted to know more when it ended. But at the end of the day, I wanted to rate this as my heart felt. It was a good story that had some flaws. A story that needed more character development to tell me why the characters acted the way they did. And I think a bit more intrigue around the situation would have helped, too.

Sally Hepworth-each one more engaging than the last!

Listening to this audiobook/audible original was pure fun. More than a romance, no murders, but surely a searing story. Made me think about things like relationships, trust, and loyalty. Trust may have been somewhat broken, but loyalty and love trumped all.

Nice reader to listen to!
