Publisher's summary

Feeling confused? Is being a white belt creating a few challenges?

This is a manual designed to get white belts to competent blue belts in as fast a time as possible.

Zen Jiu Jitsu is more a rendition of concepts than techniques. This is the simplest and easiest way to break down and simplify the many and varied ideas, philosophies, and combinations in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu arsenal. For both competition Jiu Jitsu and self-defense Jiu Jitsu, most white belts need to fully understand the concepts, but they can be VERY confusing!

Here is a short list of a few of the questions students ask that are covered in depth:

  • What is the guard and how do we utilize it best?
  • What options do we have from guard?
  • Why is posture and distance important?
  • The mount is a powerful position but how do I get there?
  • And when I do get there, how do I stay there?

Zen Jiu Jitsu: White to Blue answers these questions and many more...

It covers core principles, drilling techniques, choosing a school, technique concepts, tactical considerations, and more. It even includes some technique chains and maps for the white belt to try when doing specific training or sparring.

Don't forget every black belt started out as a white belt!

This manual also covers the motivational strategies to keep you moving along the path and toward becoming a competent blue belt.

This is a great manual for anyone just starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, traditional Jiu Jitsu, MMA, or grappling.

Good Advice for beginners

Not a technique manual, but more of a mindset and what to expect. Really good books for anyone starting in the amazing journey of BJJ. Alot of great points and perspectives discussed.

Very helpful

As a 6 month white belt there is a ton of useful information in this book that actually showed up on the mat shortly after reading.

Solid Advise

This is a very good book for those starting in there Jiu Jitsu journey. I appreciate Oliver’s honesty and openness in this book. The audio clarity was rough at times but it well worth the listen. I will be listening through it again for advice I missed.

Super helpful

As green as it gets. Found the book invaluable. 1 month, maybe 2 into the practice and found the book to be just the kind of cerebral fitness I needed when wrapping my brain around the first five or so classes.

Great book! Some audio issues.

I’ve listened to this book twice and am about to start for a third time. I’ve really enjoyed the material even though the audio has a few cut outs. I’m really excited to put in to practice the techniques described with faith that they will up my game.

Good information for beginners in BJJ

There were a few pauses or cuts that stood out, that I wished editing would have caught.

Poor Audio Recording

The audio quality is very poor. There are portions of the recording where you can hear cell phones in the background, long pauses, and even some unfinished sentences. Book is OK, but I would advise against the audio version.
