About this listen

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

Surprisingly good!

I wasn’t expecting much, tbh, but the story was pretty good—a little bit of everything; drama, comedy, mystery, and action. I usually get where the books are heading, but this one leaves some mystery I can’t wait to discover. The narrator is good, but some voices she uses grate on me. I'll be reading the next one.

Mediocre

Book - Story was pretty basic. Characters were very well done. World building was minimal.

Performance - female narrator was lovely. Make narrator’s voice and acting was lovely, however, he inhaled sharply every 2-3 words and no one edited this sound from the Final Cut so it was so grating to listen to. Such a shame, because he did such a great job!

Dan Calley ruined it for me

Great book but I couldn’t listen to the chapters with Dan, the breath he takes after every 2 words was so annoying and took me right out of the story. If he didn’t do that it would’ve been great.

3 stars, yes to the first 60%, no to the rest, DNF

The first 60% was breathtaking and romantic but then it goes downhill and turns into horror. It reminds me of A Court of Thorns and Roses that way. The first 60% is captivating, I really loved Max & Tisanna getting closer, watching them both trying to overcome their pasts and circumstances but the book undergoes a genre change and becomes very dark and twisted once Tisanna completes her training. The female narrator is good but the male narrator really ruins it and it’s jarring. Maybe they should have just let the female narrator do all of Max’s parts. I could only give it 3 stars and I didn’t finish it because the difference in tone between the first last and last 3rd is so jarring. I knew Max was hiding something dark but not that dark. To me they really ruined Tisanna in the last 1/3, I stopped rooting for her because I couldn’t believe how dark she had to get to rescue people. It was too much. It seemed like she gave up too much and she was so dangerous and destructive that I thought it would have been best for someone to stop her rather than let her continue on. Max turned out to be a wimp and supportively stood by her side as it all went to hell. I just couldn’t buy how Max could still be into her even though she went off the rails in the worst way and kept harming him. It wasn’t romantic, it made her seem so volatile and unpredictable! I would have preferred if she had developed her own power rather than what happened. Did not finish but the first 2/3 of the book was good. The last 1/3 went downhill and overall ruined the love story for me - lethal menace, harm, violence and danger between love interests is not romantic.

Neither really good or really bad

Good world building, good characters, a bit slow at times. The male voice actor who doesn't come in until half way into the story was unnecessary. Maybe the second book is better now that the story's foundation is established, but based solely on this one book, I probably wouldn't recommend it.

Great story, awful narrator

I really liked the story but the narrator was terrible. Almost quit and didn’t finish it.

Loved it

One of the best audiobooks I listened to this year. The magoc and story is compelling, the characters are complicated and well developed, I can’t wait for the sequel

Breathy Reader

The book was a little slow at first but I did enjoy the story once it picked up. The book as well changes readers and the male reader kept taking so many short breathes it was hard to understand him at times. Otherwise, an interesting story.

Great start to what seems like a great series

Character development is fantastic. The plot is very interesting and keeps you hooked from beginning to end. Don’t let the reviews of the breathy male narrator keep you from listening. You get used to it and it’s well worth it. Great read!

Slow burn Romance, but original world

I really enjoyed book one in this series. I had read that the book has a slow burn romance but honestly, I’m glad for that. I was able to get to know the characters better and it not get so invested in a relationship.
