Publisher's summary

When Daine comes down from the mountains, she carries with her two things: a dark secret about her own past, and a strangely powerful magic that even she doesn't understand.

Soon Daine has a job working for Onua, the queen's horsemistress, who is astonished at the girl's way with animals. It's almost as if she can speak to them....

Daine and Onua travel to Pirate's Swoop, where Daine finds herself swept into a war that threatens all of Tortall, a war where magic is one of the main weapons.

The wall between the worlds is cracking.

The magical creatures are returning.

Now Daine must master her own magic, and face her own dark memories, if she is to save her new home from destruction.

Editorial reviews

In this fantasy we meet another strong, young female character with special powers. Daine is gifted in many ways - she's an excellent archer - but her special talent lies in her ability with animals, who seem to listen to her words. Daine earns a job working for Onua, the queen's horse mistress, who is impressed by the girl's powers. Tamora Pierce leads in narrating this exciting tale, which is lovingly detailed and populated by a cast of almost thirty people (including the writer's husband). Once listeners get used to the story switching from the narrator's voice to those of the actors, they will be pleased at its fanciful magic.

One of My Favorites with Full Cast

Where does Wild Magic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's one of my all time favorite books and a favorite audiobook that I return to every few years.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Numair Salmalin...he's my all time favorite male lead, because he's smart, practical, goofy, and an all around good person.

What about Tamora Pierce’s performance did you like?

I'm a huge fan of hers, so to have something read by her is amazing. I also love that it's full cast, which gives it almost a performance piece vibe. My only complaint is that the woman cast for Daine could be a bit whiny at times. When I read in my mind for Daine, her voice comes off as matter-of-fact, not whimpering.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book is so nostalgic for me and whenever I read it or listen to it, I discover new aspects of it. It's a book you can read at 14 and love, and read ten years later and realize how well-written it was and how much it shapes a lot of your own thoughts. It really resonates.

Any additional comments?

If you haven't read any of Tamora Pierce's Tortall books, I recommend starting with Song of the Lioness quartet, but this is actually the book that got me into Tortall. They're great books for young adults and many of my friends who also read this as young adults find themselves rereading the books well into their 30s, because they really stay with you. They are severely underrated and deserving of their own TV and film adaptations. I'm nearing 30 myself and I not only reread them, but I've kept up with her books, and am eagerly waiting for her to publish more.

Wonderful Coming of Age Story

You can't go wrong listening to anything by Tamora Pierce and Full Cast Audio. Instead of listening, you live the book.

Fun Story, Production Sounds a Little Cheesy

This was a fun adventure story, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In the beginning, I thought the narration was a little goofy and offputting, but it was nice to have voices for all the characters separate from the narrator. And I got used to the cheesy-Ness. Definitely a young teen story, but still fun for this adult. Hoping there's another story to follow.

I grew up with these books

I am partial to these stories because I grew up reading them. Now I listen to them on long rides or during housework. They are easy to follow and engaging. I also enjoy the dynamics between the strong female lead and other strong female and male characters.

Fantastic!

I've read this series more times than I could count. The story is phenomenal. I honestly got the audiobook because I was curious if one particular part roughly midway through the book was narrated as expressively as my brain did it and let me tell you, it absolutely WAS. I was cackling in my car listening to Numair have a meltdown. I didn't necessarily love the way non-voices were narrated (felt a little too stiff to me compared to the talking) but it wasn't really distracting from the story so I didn't take any points off the rating for it. All in all, 10/10 will listen again.

Robotic

Love the story! The narrative was robotic though and couldn't keep listening as it ruined the story. Sorry, Tamora you are an amazing story writer. Wish this would be redone with Bernadette Dunne as she did many of the others and I really enjoyed it.

wonderful

I have listened to Wild Magic over and over on my iPod. Is is a book full of action mixed with a world full of evil and good immortals, great gods and goddesses, and powerful sourcerers. All of Tamora Pierce's books are awesome, all occuring in the same world, although specifically written about different corners of the world. If this book was appealing to you, then you would enjoy all of Pierce's works as I have.

excellent book!

This was the first full cast audio I have listened to, and it probably influenced my impression of this book. I absolutely LOVED this read. It was never dull and I couldn't wait to get in my car until I listened to it all! It was a great book that was not hard to follow and I enjoyed it nearly as much as I did the ERAGON series. Can't wait to read more of this author.
