About this listen

The Confessions of St. Augustine is one of the most moving diaries ever recorded of a man's journey to the fountain of God's grace. Writing as a sinner, not a saint, Augustine shares his innermost thoughts and conversion experiences, and wrestles with the spiritual questions that have stirred the hearts of the thoughtful since time began.

Starting with his childhood in Numidia and continuing through his youth and early adulthood in Carthage, Rome, and Milan, this book shows Augustine as a human being, a fellow traveler on the road to salvation. If you are fighting changes in your life, struggling to know God more, or staggering around roadblocks in your faith, Augustine's confessions will stretch your mind and enrich your soul.

A challenging but not daunting read

I was expecting to be intimidated by both the content and the archaic linguistics. But thanks to the outstanding narration, I was surprised not only by being able to comprehend but also enjoy Confessions. You do have to listen intently though. There is no drifting in thought if you want to fully understand Augustine’s writings. It also helped that I slowed the speed down just a bit. There is often a lovely, almost lyrical, cadence to his writing that draws the readers/listeners in.
Highly recommend.

Philosophy meets Relgion

Great content overall but my patience wained as he talked about time for what seemed hours. Genius and devout yet wordy.

Tough but worth it

A great read/ listen. The language itself is tough to get through but this reading is clear and very manageable. Many wonderful gems to found in this work.

The Deep Spiritual Journey of the Author

Confessions is a work best digested in small doses with appropriate contemplation and consideration of the confession. The narration is good. However, if you are familiar and comfortable with the KJV language usage of "thee and thou," you will be satisfied with this translation from Latin to English. If not, then you should select another version. Besides this, the work is rich and rewarding. His work is a transparent dialogue. It confronts the reader with the timeless realities of the human struggle for St. Augustine, his time, and ours through his spiritual autobiography of trials, tribulations, joys, sorrow, and ultimate conversion to the Christian faith.

It’s worth listening to but…

It would be nice to have a more modern translation. However, if you take time to listen then you will slowly understand more the KJV language.

I have a long way to go

Learned that if a man needs to confess stealing pears for the fun of it, before he is even a convert to christianity, that I have a long long long way to go to become a better man.
