About this listen

Abraham Lincoln was undeniably one of the most influential politicians in American history. In this collection of letters, speeches, and other writings by Lincoln, listeners can gain a uniquely intimate perspective on the 16th president of the United States. From personal letters to friends and family to Lincoln's speeches as an Illinois state legislator and a United States Representative, from his first inaugural address to the Emancipation Proclamation and the famous Gettysburg Address, Lincoln addresses such important political issues as slavery and states' rights, and relates his personal views on marriage and depression.

Also included are Lincoln's eulogy for Henry Clay, a letter of condolence for one of the Civil War's first casualties, the second inaugural address, Lincoln's last public address, his last written words, and many more. A vital glimpse into the mind of one of America's greatest statesmen, this is a must-listen for anyone interested in Lincoln's life and legacy.

Includes One Document Not Authenticated

One document included in this collection, the speech to the Republican Party at Bloomington, IL, in 1856 has been determined by most scholars to be largely inaccurate as a transcript of Lincoln's actual speech there. Otherwise, this is a good collection.

The Title Says it All

I learned a bit more about Lincoln Everytime I hear his voice. He was a bit of a conflicted fellow and some of these writings will come across as racist but I think he was a man conflicted, caught in politics and trying to remain true to his own morality. It is hard being a person who is true to yourself and to all those around you.

It is so easy to Judge and times were so different back then. I still think he was a man of terrific character regardless of what he said. I get the feeling if I had a chance to speak with him today he would listen to what I had to say. I don't know where I am going with this review but if you read this book you will understand.

Being an American is tough work. Abraham really put his time in and his neck on the line.

As Advertised

Love him, hate him, or bounce back and forth - Abraham Lincoln was a dynamic speaker & a brilliant lawyer. Overall, he knew how to play the crowd and tell them what he needed to. He was very much a politician. There is some interesting stuff in here for people into speeches and all.

More

I would have liked the scene set for the excerpts. More contexts. More time frames.

Give the listener a clue!

Alan Sklar's reading is superb.

A table of contents and a transcription of the complete texts appear as "Bonus Content" at the Tantor Media webpage for this book. Adding a mention of this material to Mr. Sklar's script could have saved us listeners considerable frustration. Is there any reason that Audible could not note, in its product description, the availability of this "Bonus Content"?

List of Speeches not available

Would you try another book from Abraham Lincoln and/or Alan Sklar?

I wish there was a list of the speeches and their locations to accompany this selection. I am taking a class on American Politcal Rhetoric and our professor wanted us to listen to the speeches if possible or read them orally ourselves. I wanted to listen to the speeches as I drove to and from work daily but this made it impossible to listen to specific speeches.
