Publisher's summary

“Stephenson has a once-in-a-generation gift: he makes complex ideas clear, and he makes them funny, heartbreaking, and thrilling.” - Time

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Anathem, Neal Stephenson is continually rocking the literary world with his brazen and brilliant fictional creations - whether he’s reimagining the past (The Baroque Cycle), inventing the future (Snow Crash), or both (Cryptonomicon). With Reamde, this visionary author whose mind-stretching fiction has been enthusiastically compared to the work of Thomas Pynchon, Don DeLillo, Kurt Vonnegut, and David Foster Wallace - not to mention William Gibson and Michael Crichton - once again blazes new ground with a high-stakes thriller that will enthrall his loyal audience, science and science fiction, and espionage fiction fans equally. The breathtaking tale of a wealthy tech entrepreneur caught in the very real crossfire of his own online fantasy war game, Reamde is a new high - and a new world - for the remarkable Neal Stephenson.

Critic reviews

“Stephenson...delivers a sprawling thriller that shows him in complete control of his story.” ( Publishers Weekly)
“Noir futurist Stephenson returns to cyberia with this fast-moving though sprawling techno-thriller...Who’ll prevail? We don’t know till the very end, thanks to Stephenson’s knife-sharp skills as a storyteller. An intriguing yarn—most geeky, and full of satisfying mayhem.” ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review)
“Sometimes when you’re reading Neal Stephenson, he doesn’t just seem like one of the best novelists writing in English right now; he seems like the only one.” (Lev Grossman, Time)

Thrill ride from start to end

I was a bit put off by Stephenson after Cryptonomicon, but he more than makes up for it in REAMDE. The characters are cerebral and distinct, each with their own quirks that come out brilliantly in the dialog.

The plot is continuously shifting, and each turn is punctuated by the resilience of the book's primary protagonist. No slow muddled storyline (which was my biggest gripe with Crypto) in REAMDE. Also, Stephenson show off his real 'nerd cred', which is as always technically accurate and non-embellished.

The narration is second to none. Hillgartner pulls off Russian, English, and CHinese accents with authenticity, and he often does it in the same breath.

REAMDE = Smiles

Any additional comments?

I finished the gigantic book. With this complete let me say "wow". I feel like I have been dumped with details and information for weeks. Excellent story, interesting characters, and plenty to keep in wrapped up in it. If you are looking for a good read and something that will take up a lot of time you may plenty of, please read this book. My first book I've read by Neal Stephenson, I think I'm going to pick out a few more.

Felt like a bait & switch

I was super excited for this story but it seemed like as soon as it got going about the virus that suddenly it was all about terrorists. It felt like Neal Stephenson really wanted to write a Tom Clancy novel but couldn’t let go of his Snow Crash roots. This novel is basically 2 totally separate stories that would have been better written that way. It would have created better standalone stories and not a War & Peace-sized behemoth. The story suffered as a result.

Unreal!

Where does Reamde rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was the first audiobook I had ever listened to and it was great!

What did you like best about this story?

The story was ever evolving. I couldn't wait to get back into my car to continue the story. It kept me on my toes with the twist and turns the story took.

What does Malcolm Hillgartner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The audio was great and the way the narrator can can shift his voice to mimic a Russian accent, a Boston accent, and even a British accent. It greatly improved the story and made you feel like you were acually overhearing the conversations had in the Book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

don't want to spoil anything.

Any additional comments?

Unreal! it is a must read/listen!

Reamde: Definitely Maybe Worth Every Minute

This novel, like most of Stephenson's, is not easy. I enjoy them, but they tend to be loooong, full of technology-talk, and maybe in need of some serious editing.

However, that's it for my negative comments. I think Stephenson has a genius for explaining technical/mathematical/philosophical/sociological/astronomical/financial/etc. concepts, theories, and applications in a way that allows his non technical/mathematical/etc. readers a glimpse into these difficult to understand fields. The bonus is that he does it in the context of a story, so it's entertaining as well as educational. I have learned to trust his knowledge and believe that he will not make stuff up or make mistakes.

I enjoyed the character performances of the narrator, Malcolm Hillgartner, and found his accents very good to acceptable (in a couple of cases).I was a bit put off by other reviews which trashed his abilities, but I found them either overly critical or just plain wrong.

If you're up for it, and have the time to devote to thought provoking ideas, a pretty good thriller-type story, and a very interesting look into the MMPORG game genre, you have your work cut out for you.

For anyone who lives within the two worlds

What made the experience of listening to Reamde the most enjoyable?

Having personal experience within the dual worlds of fantasy gaming and reality,,, this romp touches on both, and turns each on its respective ear. Sometimes reality is more fantasy than fantasy. The characters are believable, the shifts flowing and the characters are fleshed out nicely. This will perhaps be the only book of Mr Stephensons i find myself liking, but like it i do, Immensely.

What other book might you compare Reamde to and why?

Reamde and Ready Player One resonate in many ways. Though they are very different, both touch on the online/fantasy/roleplaying lifestyle, its appeal and shortcomings. The threads flowing through both are different in feel and texture, but a certain joie de vivre marks these books as kindred and has made me set them side by side on my favorites shelf. The third both of this silly and wonderful trilogy of sorts is Redshirts. Again vastly different in its content, and yet......................................

Which scene was your favorite?

as a gamer, I would have to claim the personal favorite of egdod wandering through the desert while a host of thousands is trying to protect him, and a ravening horde is attempting to attack him. To be honest i wish the gaming world were just a bit more fleshed out.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

extreme reaction? No, something a little more subtle. I left this world,,,, satisfied. I closed the book as if i were headed home from a visit with friends,,, friends whose lives will continue,, hopefully with a little less excitement moving forward, but still they wont cease to exist even though i am no longer there to watch......

Any additional comments?

Only that now, i want to play the silly game,,, the one that doesnt really exist. . I wish Mr Stephenson would write more books like this. I have bought all his other books for my son and attempted to read them myself, but alas, i simply cannot get into them. This one i will treasure and my son had to buy his own copy.

One of My All-Time Favorites

I love this book. It's fascinating and beautifully written. I think the characters are well-rounded and distinctive, and the action and storyline are top-notch and original. I've listened to it at least half a dozen times and liked it so much I also bought a hard copy, which is the opposite of my usual purchase sequence.
My copy of the audiobook is in the correct order (I purchased it in 2012.) If yours is out-of-sequence, call Audible support. I've had problems with certain books stuttering on my iPods and the support rep was able to help me straighten it out in very few minutes.

Non-stop hilarious thrills

If you could sum up Reamde in three words, what would they be?

Chinese computer viruses, Al-Qaeda, the Russian mafia. All they have in common is a Midwestern farm girl.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Reamde?

While exiting a building set on fire to escape the terrorists who are hot in pursuit, one of the characters feels vaguely guilty about using the emergency exit, since it's really only supposed to be used in emergencies. The book is full of such subtly drawn, amusing, and realistic psychological moments.

Any additional comments?

Neal Stephenson at his best. This could have used a little editing to tighten it up, but this was so much more fun and readable than the Baroque Cycle.

Another great novel by Neal Stephenson.

If you could sum up Reamde in three words, what would they be?

Near Future Thriller

What did you like best about this story?

I like the many moments when Stephenson stops for a moment in the story to share an interesting anectote for the situation at hand. One example is a description of why people have the archetypical elves and dwarves in fantasy literature. another is how some conversations can eventually revolve around non-sequitor subjects, like bears, and a good conversationalist will steer clear of them.

What does Malcolm Hillgartner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hillgartner is a good narrator with a deep voice and clear pronunciation that carry well across a room. He also adds a distinct personality to every character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I hesitate to describe the moment because it would spoil an important plot twist halfway in the book. Let's say our protagonist has been put in a terrible situation realizes that not only can she escape, but many of the decisions she made up to that point have been subtly enabling that escape.

Any additional comments?

I recommend giving it a chance. If you like Neal Stephensons writing style, you'll like this book. Personally, I don't believe that this is Neal Stephenson's strongest work when compared to genre-defining masterpieces like Snow Crash and The Diamond Age. That doesn't mean that its a bad book by any means. Instead of taking place 40 or 100 years in the future, it takes place two. Some of the events are plausible, but I found it harder to suspend my disbelief.

What a great story.

Would you listen to Reamde again? Why?

No. I don't read books or listen to them twice. Just me, not because a book is good or bad

What did you like best about this story?

All of the twists and the group of characters you end up liking

What about Malcolm Hillgartner’s performance did you like?

Better than average

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No

Any additional comments?

It's a long book that is well worth the time spent. Around 40 hours. I was sad when I was done because I had spent so much time with the characters that I didn't want it to stop.
