About this listen

With his talent for divining the future, Alex Verus should have foreseen his friends' reactions to the revelations about his previous life. Anne Walker no longer trusts him - and has also cut all ties with the mage community after getting kicked out of the apprentice program. As a favor to Luna, Alex's own apprentice and Anne's best friend, he checks in on her only to be told to leave her alone. Then Anne gets kidnapped. The Council Keepers of the Order of the Star believe that Dark mages from her past may be involved. Working with the Keepers, Alex and Luna discover that Anne has been taken into the shadow realm of Sagash, her former Dark mage mentor, and they must find a way to rescue her. But another shadow from the past has resurfaced - Alex's former master may be back in London, and Alex has no idea what his agenda is....

Good rendition

If you have the other Alex Verus books on audio you know what to expect. Solid performance (pleasant but not extraordinary) good story.

Great book & series. Wanting More!

As has been said, if you like Harry Dresden you will like this as well. It leaves you wanting more but not so patiently.

Alex faces emotional vulnerability and an old fear

This series gets better and better. I'm excited about what is coming next for Alex. I love that there are now emotional entanglements and real friendships in the cast of characters, despite the fact that much of that seems in jeopardy at the end of this book. We are finally seeing payoff from the circumstances introduced in the first couple of books and how interconnected these threats may be.

Do yourself a favor and invest in theis series

It is so worth your time to listen to this series, it's different from any other magic based series I've read and believe me, that's a good thing!

More nuanced than Dresden

I like these. The books take a while to hit their speed, but the character development is good, the main protagonist is not a traditional hero - he doesn't set himself to die for the greater good; he's for the most part just trying to survive.

Thought it would be boring

Any additional comments?

It took me a long time to pick up the first book in this series and read it. The premise always seemed boring to me, but it is not. Jacka has created a really fun urban fantasy series. The series follows a diviner and his apprentice through various adventures. The protagonist is a moderate talent of one very specialized skill, and his intelligence keeps him alive. This is a book in which the reader is not just told the protagonist is intelligence and expected to accept it as a truly predictable story unfolds. The protagonist does demonstrate intelligence through his creativity. Give this series a try. You will enjoy it.

Pretty good sequel

Magic blended with bad guys chasing good guys. Plots now becoming predictable, somewhat bland, but still entertaining.

Too many magic tricks. Hard to keep track of them.

Narration is brilliant. Love the unique, gravelly voice.

Recommend not listening to more of this series back to back. Becomes tedious and tiresome.

Talk about exciting, another great book!!!

That is what I love about Benedict Jacka's books, it is exciting from the first chapter. Alex gets himself and others in some really sticky situations. Gildart Jackson does a really great job performing these books. It's like a full cast of characters. It's hard to believe all of those voices come out of one person. I was glad when in this book Alex actually talked about age. I just guessed that Alex was more mature than the apprentices, but not by just 8 years. Good to know.

Just loving this series!

I like the dynamic in this series between the tarnished hero Alex and the rest of the magic community. Adds an extra dimension of intrigue to the Good/Bad framework of most supernatural series. The author makes an interesting cast of characters that cycle in and out of the narrative smoothly
My only quibble is that I don't really feel like the story is needs to be based in London. If you are reading to feel a vicarious connection then maybe the Peter Grant series would serve you better.
