Publisher's summary

In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

Deeply scary and intensely unnerving, Iain Reid's debut novel is a tightening spiral of a story about a woman's uncertainty of her relationship with her boyfriend, Jake. After an uncomfortable and confusing trip to meet Jake's parents at their isolated farmhouse, reality unravels, and events spin out of control when Jake and "The Girlfriend" make an unscheduled stop at an abandoned high school.

Part murder mystery, part psychological thriller, I'm Thinking of Ending Things is about doubt, psychological fragility, and the lengths we'll go to avoid the truth. As twisted as Shutter Island, as suspenseful as Under the Skin, and as atmospheric as The Sisters Brothers, Reid's breakout literary thriller is sure to keep listeners guessing until the last minute.

A beautiful let down.

There was such potential in the storyline. But it took a long time to get used to the performers chirpy voice so that it wasn't so distracting. I think a lot of wonderful questions and concepts are raised in the introspective reflections of the narrator but there is a lot of tremendous buildup for a not so fulfilling ending.

Avoid the book description!!!

It spoils the direction this book will take. For the best experience, listen without any expectations.

Pay Attention

You've definitely got to focus with this one. It's hard to tell when the narrator is speaking in the present or past and then whether she's speaking to herself or not.

Very creepy book though. Would make an awesome short movie. I enjoyed it. Would recommend.

Sometimes it's best when you're left with no words

To anyone who has not read this book, I encourage you to. Better yet! - LISTEN to it on Audible. 100% One of THE BEST narrations I've ever heard. I began listening to this book at 3am this morning and just finished it, and my mind is BLOWN. 🤯 I can't even form a thought. It's eerie and raw and chilly and disturbing in all the best ways. Not my typical Psychological Thriller I'd gravitate to, but I'm so glad I did! And the narrator, Candace Thaxton, took this story and upped it about eighteen levels. It has everything in it - but in a minimal way - until BAM. Iain Reid is an incredible storyteller, and you'll feel confused at times because he's so good with the plot, but you MUST STICK WITH IT. There's a few different stories or movies I could blend up and say it's like (even though it's still original), but no matter WHAT I say or compare it to, it'd give a spoiler away... It's not a horror, there's no jumpatcha moments, but every word pushes you further and further back into this dark place, and you can't stop listening, and you have to keep going, and at times you are holding your breath for so long you nearly pass out - but it is worth it.

Fans of Paula Hawkins, Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, and A.J. Finn will LOVE this.

Between the writing, the momentum, the eeriness, the storytelling, the audiobook narration, everything:

☆☆☆☆☆ 5 star rating from me.

I'm thinking of ending things was a great book. The characters were amazing and it was hard to put down. I hope they make this book into a movie, soon!
