About this listen

Sometimes the humorous one is deceptively dangerous . . .

Jack Owens purchased a commission in the army to escape his hateful grandmother and the dilapidated estate she refused to care for. He enjoyed serving as an officer and spy for the Duke of Wellington, and approached the adventures with humor.

Kate Rafferty had been sent to a girls' school after the tragic death of her parents in a house fire whilst living in India. Once she finished school, instead of a London Season, she found her mother's aunt to be her guardian and expected Kate to take care of her. The woman was a mean old shrew who had run off almost all of her servants and had let her estate fall to ruin.

When at last the woman died, Kate sensed freedom and hurried to London to take charge of her inheritance. When Jack returns to London for the Prince Regent's victory celebrations, he finds he has inherited a ward and his grandmother's estate.

Neither wants to be saddled with the other, but the old lady means to manipulate them both from the grave . . . and they start to fall in love.

Excellent listen - great story

Great story line, Well-developed and interesting characters....and Alex Wyndham. What's not to like? And I did like this book. Elizabeth Johns has become a favorite author for me. Her stories are creative and compelling...as are her characters. This book was no different. I also appreciate that EJ and her editors know when to end a book....they don't add 3 hours to it...just to repeat and repeat. Well done, EJ and Alex.

Suspense

I liked the characters and the story. it was original and the characters stood out as strong and capable.
The narrator did a wonderful job making each character stand out as individuals.

Great mystery and romance

Elizabeth Johns is now one of my favorite authors, and Alex Whndham is simply divine as always. Can't wait to start on the next in the series.

Excellent narrator

Wonderful narrator makes the story worth listening to. The story itself is sweet and enjoyable, except the heroine acts foolishly repeatedly, risking her life unnecessarily.

Ridiculous

I really liked the previous books in the series and I love Alex w as the narrator, but this book is terrible.
I like the H/H, but the circumstances of the story do not make any sense. I can't get over how all the trained spies get "caught" talking about their plan by the heroine. The plan of these soldiers and senior officers are foiled by 2 20year old women...really??
The heroine takes a fall off a horse and has a broken arm. Not sure why the author wrote this in, as she goes around, even going to a ball, as if she does not have her arm in a splint. Why bother with this detail if activities go forward as if her arm is not broken? Totally ridiculous, as even this broken arm does not stop her sneaking around.
There is no real suspense, as every clue just comes to the h/h and everything gets solved with little fuss.
The entire "mystery" wraps up out of nowhere. just ridiculous and contrived it defies reason. The only people that could find this interesting have never read a book before this one. It is impossible that the book is rated so highly. It's terrible and does not do justice to the other books in the series.
Read this if you want to complete the series, but it is a waste of time and money.
