Publisher's summary

An unique and intense tale following Elim Garak as he attempts to stitch the ravaged society of Cardassia back together.

For nearly a decade Garak has longed for just one thing—to go home. Exiled on a space station, surrounded by aliens who loathe and distrust him, going back to Cardassia has been Garak's one dream. Now, finally, he is home. But home is a world whose landscape is filled with death and destruction. Desperation and dust are constant companions and luxury is a glass of clean water and a warm place to sleep.

Ironically, it is a letter from one of the aliens on that space station, Dr. Julian Bashir, that inspires Garak to look at the fabric of his life. Elim Garak has been a student, a gardener, a spy, an exile, a tailor, even a liberator. It is a life that was charted by the forces of Cardassian society with very little understanding of the person, and even less compassion.

But it is the tailor that understands who Elim Garak was, and what he could be. It is the tailor who sees the ruined fabric of Cardassia, and who knows how to bring this ravaged society back together. This is strange, because a tailor is the one thing Garak never wanted to be. But it is the tailor whom both Cardassia and Elim Garak need. It is the tailor who can put the pieces together, who can take a stitch in time.

A very long awaited addition to my library

This was the novel I ever bought. I loved DS9, and especially Garak. I read and re-read the paperback for years. A Stitch in Time was also why I originally got an audible trial to see if it was available; It wasn't. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant triumph of a performance, nothing disappoints, and the storytelling is lively and captivating. If you love Star Trek, then this is the quintessential book about Cardassian lore. If you're just getting into the latest additions to Star Trek - and hopefully, they continue - Garak is sure to be seen on screen again.

I highly recommend this.

Absolutely Stupendous

I cannot recommend this novel more. it is outstanding on every level. So much so that I know I am going to listen to it repeatedly.

I do believe this is by far the best novel in all of Star Trek extended literature, and it plays out as an incredible memoir of a very subtly sophisticated character with a deeply hidden and mysterious past and mind within the DS9 lore.

Easily the best Star Trek book I've consumed.

Pure delight

I had read the book some years ago and enjoyed it, but listening to it in the author’s own voice brings it to a whole other level. Magnificent.

One of the best Star Trek books brought to life

What a terrific experience to get to listen to such a great book, read by its author, and portrayer of Garak on Deep Space Nine. I loved getting to hear Garak brought to life again by Andy. It reminded me of how great he is as Garak, and how great of a character Garak is. Truly worth the listen.

Amazing!!

It was even better than I had expected. So many things I'd like to say about the story but I don't want to spoil it. It included elements of 80s & 90s scifi alongside more contemporary literary elements, all while being a key part of DS9's broader story without being smothered by it. And hearing it in "Garak's" voice was a joy. This is going in my oft-revisited rotation.

Stop. Do Not Pass Go. Read this book immediately.

I love this alternate take on Garak’s end… and the only tale of his backstory. Wonderfully done!

Quality Writing and Performance

The quality of the writing was a pleasant surprise. It borders on the level of intellectual fiction by historically famous writers. The reading performance was excellent but expected, since I am familiar with his acting. A worthwhile read, and a nice break from space opera stories.
