About this listen

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets First Lie Wins in this electric, voice-driven debut novel about an elusive bestselling author who decides to finally confess her true identity after years of hiding from her past.

Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

As a young adult, she and her best friend Amanda dreamed of escaping their difficult homes and moving to California to become movie stars. But the day before their grand adventure, a tragedy shattered their dreams and Cate has been on the run ever since, taking on different names and charting a new future. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.

Entertaining

It was a good story but at times lacked depth and nuance. It also was tied up a little too nicely. The main character does something pretty terrible to just be forgiven so easily or accepted back.

Hated the ending

Not a fan of flat endings, happy but flat. it lacked the details that were shared throughout the whole book. Neat and tidy endings seem like the easy way not.

Flash backs and forwards

There were a lot of different flash backs and forwards and the story kept going back and forth between characters. Some characters I didn’t feel need to have a one of chapter. Overall it was a good read and in the end we all need grace.

Compelling & immersive like a private “tell-all” one-on-one conversation

I listen to so many audiobooks that now I hunt for what I call the “singular voice” type of stories where the characters dialogue feels like they are talking directly with you - as if your Friend is pulling you aside from a crowded party to tell you something profound, compelling, and intimately private. The moment I started listening to this book I knew the writer was “not like the rest”. I love how Fagan describes even the character’s feelings in this book - using a group of words never assembled before (in my experience) to describe sentiments of the characters in certain situations. This book lowered my blood pressure and I was in an all-encompassing bubble through each character and the events of the book. Thank you for the letting me drift away and fully swim inside your words & this story, Ms. Fagan!!

Fictional Masterpiece

Fantastic flow and the different voices for narration helped even more! I have read Kate Fagan’s non-fiction and was amazed but reading this, I almost forgot that it wasn’t based on a true story! Incredibly impressed.

Not bad, could be better

I listened to the whole thing. Generally I have no issue walking away if a book doesn’t draw me in. Con’s: Story feels unbelievable. The way it jumps around to indicate passage of time makes me feel like I kept missing something. Not bad, could be better.

Left me wanting more

Great read. Like any good book, it left me not wanting the book to end.
