Publisher's summary

With her family’s legacy on the line, a woman with everything to lose must rely on a man hiding from his past…

Oklahoma, 1890

Frontier women don’t ride off alone to track an outlaw—not even women as capable as tomboy spinster Willa Malone. But Willa desperately needs the bounty money offered for her father’s killer if she’s to keep their homestead and take care of her sisters. That means she needs an expert tracker's help. Gideon Hartley has the skill, but the handsome trail guide also has a troubling secret…

Gideon has spent years trying to numb his pain with whiskey. Little by little, their quest—and Willa’s belief in him—is restoring the sense of purpose he thought he’d lost. Journeying into the heart of danger, they’ll have to face down the past together if they hope to protect their future…

“Linda Goodnight is a writer who pulls readers into her stories with characters who come off the pages with life.”

Good read

A story of triumph longing loyalty and strength with a few jokes thrown in. I enjoyed this journey our two totally opposite people took on together. I would recommend.

A NICE EASY READ THAT MOSES ALONG…

I am a little neutral about this book. It wasn’t “bad,” but it sure took a long time to get to the interesting part.

The main character, Willa needs money to save her family homestead for her two sisters and herself after her father is shit and killed by a well-known outlaw. There is a large reward for his capture - $1,000. Willa decides this is the fastest way to earn the money she needs to pay off what she owns the bank, although certainly not the easiest or SAFEST way to earn it as she’s a woman (a small woman at that) who will have to take down a dangerous criminal, and to do it,, she’ll have to travel along through Indian territory.

Willa decides her best bet is to hire the surely (but very handsome) Mr. Hartley, who has the reputation of being the best tracker in the entire state of Oklahoma. He was a tracker for the Army, and that’s good enough for Willa.

But, when she finally located Mr. Hartley, he’s in a saloon and is drunk as a skunk. He’s also not too polite and tells Willa in no uncertain terms that he hasn’t tracked in over a year.

Willa is not going to take no for an answer — Hartley is her only chance of bringing in the man who shot her father and collecting the bounty money.

Hartley is NOT easily convinced. First, he has a serious drinking problem, and tracking while drunk is a sure fire way to get killed. So, no thank you, he’ll pass on the job. But there’s something about the persistent Willa that wears him down. Hartley knows that before he can agree to take Willa on the journey she wants to embark on, he first has to kick his booze habit. It’s not easy and it’s not pretty. Willa helps him, but she soon finds out Hartley drinks for a reason. He drinks to forget a terrible tragedy in his past, and whiskey is the only thing that turns the memories off from playing continuously in his mind.

Willa has no idea what Harriet’s dark secret is all about, but FINALLY, in Chapter 16, although Hartley is still shaky and secretly very unsure of himself, he and Willa take off after the outlaw, aiming to bring him in alive or dead….

There is some predictability to the story in that the tough little woman who has vowed to never love a man and the hardened man who has decided he’s not fit to love or BE loved, begin developing serious feelings for each other. The pair is confronted with some danger along the way from nature and man, but naturally their feelings for each other pull them through the challenges.

Does Willa get her man (and her criminal) and save her homestead? You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out.

As I said, I found this to not be a “bad” book, but was a little too predictable and sappy for my taste (but my opinion is of course subjective). You may enjoy it. It was kind of a sweet story.
