Nieves ejerce su profesión de médico rural en un pueblo de cuatrocientos habitantes del Bajo Aragón. No puede decir que este destino sea el sueño de su vida, pero durante dos años ha trabajado con todo el entusiasmo que su juventud y el distanciamiento con sus pacientes se lo han permitido. Atrás van quedando las sombras de un amor frustrado y el recuerdo de una relación compleja con su padre. Sin embargo, su vida dará un giro inesperado el día que se cruce en su camino Jacinta, maestra de un pueblo vecino, que le pedirá ayuda para diagnosticar los extraños síntomas que presenta una de sus alumnas, la pequeña Micaela. La niña padece unas inquietantes ausencias que no presagian nada bueno.
Nieves y Jacinta entablan una amistad que podría ser el resultado de la soledad de una y el duelo de la reciente viudedad de la otra. La preocupación que ambas sienten por Micaela será la base de esta relación que tal vez en otro lugar y en otras circunstancias no se hubiera producido. No obstante, la obsesión que Nieves muestra en llegar al origen del síndrome que padece Micaela pondrá a prueba en algunas ocasiones la fortaleza de esa amistad.
Sin ser consciente del terreno en el que se mueve, Nieves descubrirá que detrás del extraño comportamiento de la niña hay secretos que atormentan a los lugareños desde hace medio siglo: heridas sin cerrar de la Guerra Civil, la guerrilla, el maquis, persecuciones despiadadas... A través de unos diarios encontrados de forma casual y de las revelaciones de la abuela de Micaela, la joven doctora irá recomponiendo un complejo entramado donde faltan los datos principales. Desenterrar el olvido puede resultar a veces tan difícil como desenterrar a los muertos. Y Nieves luchará por conseguir las dos cosas, a pesar del peaje que tendrá que pagar.
