Publisher's summary

Not all guys obsess over tiny details…but Army Special Forces do.

The wall just didn’t look right. Alex has been trying to cope. Life after his deployment had been rough. His ex-wife thought he needed to stop disappointing their daughter. She was right.

He would try harder.

With six hours before his little girl’s fourth birthday party, he saw the anomaly. One wall was too short. Plenty of time to tear out a panel and look behind it. He found a brick wall. His house wasn’t made of brick.

Behind that was another just like the first. He still had time. When the second wall came down, Alex stood and stared at the shining doorway. Next to it, held up by a knife, was a note. It was a warning - and he didn’t listen.

You’ll love being transported through time, to a future unlike anything we’ve imagined, where Alex’s fight to get back home becomes an epic struggle. This first book in the series will blow you away.

A real snoozefest

Alex is an idiot who cares only for his own personal enjoyment and his own prestige. I gave up about 50% of the way and Fast Forwarded to the end. It was like a teenage boy wrote a story for school where he went through a magic door to a better world where he got to be a mighty fighter, a hero and much loved leader who always won because of his superior skills of a couple years compared to those who have spent a lifetime doing the same things. White man meets Native Americans and shows them why he is better than them.

well written great premise

I was immediately intrigued by what was behind the wall. Then the constant new world of Kragdon-ah continued. I listen driving back and forth to work but could not stop listening many days. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. I use Stama but look forward to simpler time when I retire, so this was a great teaser of my own future life. Thanks Shawn for a great book and world!

It's good, but not great.

I'll still give the second one a chance because I'm a big fan of Shawn's work. One of the odd things that I kept questioning about this book is the main characters affection for his daughter. Not a lot of effort on his part to actually get back. Also, as he's been gone so long and he left the brick wall and door open.... did nobody check up on him while he's been missing for four years? I'm hoping some of this gets answered in the next book.

What a unique time travel experience!

This book was something I stumbled upon while browsing through different selections. It is a GREAT series and I binged the entire trilogy. If you like the "hero out of time" genre, this is it...you'll love it too. A great character, great story, great narrator...all of it works so well. Give it a go!

Captivating is the only word I can think of!

The story reaches out and grabs your attention from the start. The narrator makes it come alive. You want to encourage Alex on this quest to return home. The story is a lot of things but boring is not one of them. I am looking forward to the next book!

Not What I Expected

This author is new to me, and I will admit the synopsis of this book did not make me want to read this book, neither did most of the reviews I read prior to deciding to give the book a try. I decided to give it a try and I am now currently listening to book 3. I will admit the narrator is not my favorite and the main character, Alex was not very likeable in the very beginning, but Alex has since grown on me over the course of his adventure.

The time travel was the opposite of what I thought it was in the beginning, which has really piqued my interest as I love the post-apocalyptic genre. It is almost too farfetched in some respects but then something else will happen that makes the story more believable.

I do not understand why some reviewers say this is not a time travel story, as it very much is—Alex goes through a mysterious door and is transported to a MUCH different time in the future.

This series so far has been quite enjoyable, and I look forward to reading the remainder.

An Excellent Listen

This is a very well written and performed story. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the books.

"Dances with Wolves" with a twist.

About chapter 15, or so, it struck me the "feel" of the story reminded me of something. It took some time, but I realized this tale is very similar to the story in the "Dances with Wolves" movie. You know, "advanced guy" goes "native" with ecologically friendly native tribe. Then, uses his skills to help tribe fight evil "advanced people".

Even with the overused trope, the story is okay. This is because the author does a good job getting you to care about the plot.

Other commenters are correct to note the story is "barely" a time travel tale. Yes, there is time travel. Does this affect much of the overall plot? No. I do not want to discuss the issue, as it could lead to minor spoilers. Think of movies where the protagonist walks through a portal and time travel happens. The story after that does not really need the portal anymore. Same here.

3-stars means it is okay. I'm not going to refer this to my friends, but I did finish it without returning the book and will start book 2; so it did not "turn me off" at least.

This is book one with no ending

I wish I would have known that this is only book 1 and it continues right into the next book so no ending. Anyways, the story is well written and performed well.
