Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

Historia
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

Nicholas Barber, a young and wayward cleric, stumbles across a group of travelling players and compounds his sins by joining them. Yet the town where they perform reveals another drama: a young woman is to be hanged for the murder of a 12-year-old boy. Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Historia
In this re-imagining of Shakespeare's famous tragedy, it is Ophelia who takes center stage. A rowdy, motherless girl, she grows up at Elsinore Castle to become the queens most trusted lady-in-waiting. She catches the attention of the captivating, dark-haired Prince Hamlet, and their love blossoms in secret. But bloody deeds soon turn Denmark into a place of madness, and ultimately, Ophelia must choose between her love for Hamlet and her own life.

Alexander's beauty, strength and defiance were apparent from birth, but his boyhood honed those gifts into the makings of a king. His mother, Olympias, and his father, King Philip of Macedon, fought each other for their son's loyalty, teaching Alexander politics and vengeance from the cradle. His love for the youth Hephaistion taught him trust, while Aristotle's tutoring provoked his mind and Homer's Iliad fuelled his aspirations.

Set amid the political turmoils of the late 17th century, Lorna Doone brings West Country history and legends alive with wonderfully imaginative fiction.

This is the story of the relationship between two grieving men at war: fierce Achilles, who has lost his beloved Patroclus in the siege of Troy; and woeful Priam, whose son Hector killed Patroclus and was in turn savaged by Achilles. A moving tale of suffering, sorrow, and redemption, Ransom is incandescent in its delicate and powerful lyricism and its unstated imperative that we imagine our lives in the glow of fellow feeling.

Ancient Constantinople, the glorious capital of the Eastern Roman Empire for over 1,000 years, and the jewel of Christendom, is the setting for this incredible historical novel. No other city in the world could compare with it in grandeur, splendor, and wealth. And when it fell to the Turks in 1453, it must have seemed like the end of the world to Christians. Famed author Mika Waltari takes us into the last months of this dying city as revealed in the diary of John Angelos, a strange man hopelessly in love with the daughter of an eminent Byzantine official.

Set in the vibrant fourteenth century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who rule despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Their affair persists through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption.

Problem telling who was speaking
The narrator did not differentiate the characters' voices. It was impossible to tell who was speaking. If I hadn't seen the Cadfael Mysteries on PBS I wouldn't have a clue what was going on. Perhaps these books should be sight read instead of listening to them.

A fine book and well-read; Patrick Tull is so-so
A fine book and well-read, although Patrick Tull is not consistent with the men's voices and cannot do women's voices at all.
I judge recorded books primarily by the narrator. This is a typical Brother Cadfael novel: lots of 12th century atmosphere, a murder mystery and a pair of young lovers.
Patrick Tull reads well, rolling the words around his mouth with great enjoyment. I grew a little tired of it before the novel finished, but still listened with pleasure. Unfortunately, Tull cannot do women's voices (although there aren't many women in the novel). I can't always tell the men apart by their voices, and sometimes it will sound as though one man is speaking and then the second half of the sentence sounds like someone else: the men’s voices are not consistent. Sometimes I can't tell if the narrator is speaking, or if it's Cadfael or some other character.
Nevertheless, it's a fine book and well-read. In fact, when I tried to find a better reader on Audible for Brother Cadfael, I couldn't.

I had a hard time getting through it. I read where someone likened Cadfael to Sherlock Holmes, but imho he was no where near on that caliber. Perhaps it’s just not the author for me.

I love this series
These books do a great job of capturing the Middle Ages, the monastic life, & the role the church played in every day life. Add to that great characters, good plots, early forensics, & a narrator whose voice fits the story perfectly, and what's not to love? (Note: I don't care much for the versions read by a woman, simply because there are SO many male characters that it just works better when read by a man.)
This first mystery does a wonderful job of easing the reader into the time & place, and introducing all of the characters.

I didn’t start with the first —
This is my favorite So far of the Chronicles (and my 7th). Peters layers the story brilliantly, and just when you think you can see the next level — the sheet is pulled out from underneath. Tull is one of the best. He has been my steadfast companion through the Aubrey-Maturin series, and his performance is perfect here.

A clever story
The machinations of Brother Cadfael reach a new level in this story.
However all is well in the end

Good story, but not my favorite narrator
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, for sure. This is a gentle historical mystery with enjoyable characters and a sense of humor.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
An interesting and perhaps predictable resolution. My one criticism is that there was no credible development of a motive. This made the ending seem a bit weak to me.
How could the performance have been better?
I find Patrick Tull to be a bit difficult to understand and he tends to over-perform. He also reads slowly and I typically listen to his narrated books at 1.25x speed.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Probably, and I have watched several of the PBS adaptations of the Cadfael books. I am not sure if this book was made into a show.
Any additional comments?
This is a good listen. I think it would be better with a different narrator. I found the first half of the book a bit slow, but the second half flowed well.

A different kind of mystery
My first experience with Ellis Peters. A good story and a nicely done dramatic presentation by Patrick Tull
