Publisher's summary
Lisa Bailey never considered a career working in death until she saw the FBI job posting for a forensic artist. The idea of using her artistic skill to help victims of crime was too compelling to pass up.
Soon she was documenting crime scenes, photographing charred corpses, and digitally retouching the disembodied heads of suicide bombers. But it was facial approximation-sculpting a face from the remnants of an unidentified victim's skull-that intrigued her the most. Bailey knew that if she could capture that person's likeness in clay, she just might help them be identified, and that might help law enforcement track down their killer.
Bailey worked on hundreds of cases and grew to become a subject matter expert in the field. It was the most challenging and fulfilling work she could have imagined, and she never thought of leaving. But her life changed when she became the target of sexual discrimination and harassment. She was stunned when FBI management protected the abusers and retaliated with threats, slander, and an arsenal of lawyers. Trapped in an increasingly hostile work environment, and infuriated at the hypocrisy of the FBI's tactics, Bailey decided to fight back. Clay and Bones is a memoir with a mission, and a fascinating exploration into the surreal and satisfying work of a forensic artist.

Story
In weeks after the September 11 attacks, 18-year-old Mansoor Adayfi was kidnapped by Afghan militia and sold to US forces for bounty money. After months of interrogations, he was sent to the US military prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, as one of its first prisoners. Like the nearly 800 other men imprisoned at Guantanamo, Adayfi didn’t know why he was imprisoned or for how long. He had never seen a skyscraper and couldn’t imagine what the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center looked like, much less how they were destroyed.

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Best-selling author Bryan Burrough recently made a shocking discovery: The small town of Temple, Texas, where he had grown up, had harbored a dark secret. One of his high school classmates, Danny Corwin, was a vicious serial killer. In this chilling tale, Burrough raises important questions of whether serial killers can be recognized before they kill or rehabilitated after they do. It is also a story of Texas politics and power that led the good citizens of the town of Temple to enable a demon who was their worst nightmare.

Story
Cora was born with a veil. She is able to discern spirits and wield the power of both the dark and the light as well as the ability to heal. Her grandmother, Mi, called it The Knowing. Cora has carried it as both a prophetic blessing and a curse, struggling under the burden until one decision changes her world. Possessed with a healer’s compulsion to help, she is unable to turn away when Fannie arrives on her doorstep, ripped, torn, and hanging precariously on the knife’s edge of death.

Story
While estranged twins Oliver and Theo Wingfield are identical in appearance, they couldn't be more different. Theo, an extrovert verging on arrogant, was always a drifter, a nomad, operating on the fringes of the law. Oliver, intense, creative and introspective, was destined to become a winemaker. Each vintage, every bottle from Oliver's Mudgee-based label, Four Dogs Missing, sells out. And now, after fifteen years without contact, Theo unexpectedly turns up at his brother's vineyard, bearing an invitation that his twin knows nothing about.

Story
Single-mom Samantha moves with her daughter to a quiet village in the Peak District. The post as matron at Hallow Croft, now an exclusive residential home, seems to offer the escape she needs. But away from the TV room and afternoon activities, one of the residents is kept locked out of sight "for their own safety." And nobody will talk about the previous matron. She disappeared, leaving behind only a scuffed diary. Forty years ago, a girl was killed on the grounds of Hallow Croft Manor. Some people even say that began a curse on the home and the family who owned it.

"This book will blow your mind! The amount of research and insight puts it in a class of its own. Couldn’t put it down. So authentic and raw, loved it!" - Amazon reviewer I'm writing these books because I'm tired of watching my friends die. Everything that we have done in America to deal with the opioid epidemic has made us drastically worse, and people don't seem to realize it. Irresponsible, profit-mongering pharmaceutical companies created millions of addicts like me. By becoming acquainted with the power and peace that a pocketful of oxy can bring an anxious teenager, readers will ...

Story
This book, based on actual cases and investigations, tells how a widespread criminal network in Spain and Morocco, stole and sold babies through an underground baby black market for decades. All the while, government, church and doctors and nurses either looked the other way, or worse, conspired together to deceive parents and family while lining their own pockets.

Story
Jane Pool likes her safe, suburban existence just fine. She has a house, a family, (an infuriating mother-in-law,) and a quiet-if-unfulfilling administrative job at the local college. Everything is wonderfully, numbingly normal. Yet Jane remains haunted by her past: her mercurial, absent mother, her parents’ secrets, and the act of violence that transformed her life.

Story
Ever, Lindsay, and Josie have ushered their daughters—Bea, Olive, and Savvy—through years of dance classes. They've tended bloodied feet, stitched ribbons to countless pairs of pointe shoes, and forged friendships that seem to transcend rivalry. But now Etienne Bernay, enfant terrible of French ballet, has come to their conservatory. Not only will he direct this year's production of The Nutcracker, but he's brought along a film crew to document his search for one special student who will receive a full scholarship to the Ballet de Paris Academie.

Must read career journey for artists!
Lisa Bailey takes us on an unparalleled career journey that led her to “sculpting” her position both literally and figuratively. Along the way, we learn about some of the most notorious cases in recent history, some that never saw the light of day, and a discrimination battle that, well…I won’t give away the outcome!! Enjoy, learn, and take away insights into the inner workings of the FBI and a creative who outsmarted the circumstances.

Amazing
I only got to page 44 because of vision issues but was totally entranced by the experiences of one called to artistry of a rare and unusual type as well as the development of that art into something a little closer to the fiction portrayed on TV. I may not have been able to give a complete review, but I preordered the audio.
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Independent Publishers Group, Chicago Review Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

02/21/2024 I have now read the audio narrated by the very talented voice actor Christina Delaine and can give a better informed review.
The book records the trials and tribulations of the woman who was to become the first forensic sculptor and all she went through and learned to achieve that ability and distinction (including classic examples of incompetent managers being 'kicked upstairs'). There are cloaked cases with the successes, stalemates, and seemingly impossible conclusions. An amazing combination of learning and drama.

Who Knew the Intricacies
Fascinating read for learning about forensics artistry and the workings of government agencies as a newbie artist in a male dominated career field.
