Loved the characters

I fell in love with the characters and felt for them as they were trying to just provide for their families. The descriptions of the bags were amazing like I could reach out and touch them or smell them! could not stop listening. Listen if. you want to be taken on a journey of passion and family values

I found this book to be entertaining and that was all I was looking for. Yes, there were cliches. Yes there were predictable plot turns. But the only thing that irked me was the way the reader pronounced Palo Alto, like there was a pause between the two words. People in the Bay Area never pause between Palo and Alto, and if it wasn’t a pause, there was something else off about it. I know, it seems petty but it’s something that somebody who would have spent 4 years at Stanford would have gotten right. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Clever and entertaining

Clever story, and wonderful performance. I look forward to more from both the author and performer.

Part mystery, part crime drama

This book was fabulous! I was so engrossed. The main plot, i.e. the counterfeit handbag empire, was compelling and dramatic, but even the mundane (in comparison) life of the main character's marriage and parenthood were easy to connect with and felt equally important to the story and interesting.
The narration is excellent. It's expressive, clear, and the narrator is perfect for the part.
Overall, I recommend! This book kept me on the edge of my seat.

The Fashionista Daymare

"Counterfeit" by Kirstin Chen, narrated by Catherine Ho deliciously questions the very basis of worth, casting doubt on the basis of modern consumerism. A must read whether you are a fashionista or not.

Not too complicated— but well told!

I liked the way the story jumped around and kept it interesting— a pretty straight forward plot- but twisted nicely. - cozy cabin book or day trip listen in the car.

There was never a dull moment

There was never a dull moment. The writer is very adept at building the characters and helping you to see through the eyes of themselves and their culture. I love the Imagery. I love the suspense, the adventure, the unexpected turn of events..... I just loved this book. Looking forward to more from this Author, The voice and drama of the narrator was perfect for the story.

a great snapshot into toxic chinese upbringing

Parts I enjoyed - The monologue of the main character was done nicely, Just the right dash of unreliable without being completely unhinged. It presented a good snapshot into how it felt growing up in a toxic chinese household obsessed with grades. The story wasn't anything mindblowing, but i think it's more of a character-focused book anyway.

Parts I didn't enjoy - While someone who's only broadly Asian American or otherwise has no connection to the specific cultural background of the main character might not notice, as someone who is more knowledgeable about the city - the author's portrayal of a Hong Kong family and culture seemed pretty inauthentic to me. It seemed only surface-level chinese and not specifically Hong Kong. For example, nobody in Hong Kong will dress children up in red for a great-grandmother's birthday dinner - it's done in SE Asia, but in Hong Kong this would be incredibly tacky. Plus, with Ava's parents supposedly being from Hong Kong - it's highly unlikely that Ava would grow up speaking Mandarin or even expect her mother to teach her son Mandarin. If anything, her mother would have mediocre Mandarin at best.

Sure enough, when I looked it up, the author grew up in Singapore - explaining her complete lack of understanding about HK family culture and her emphasis on Mandarin. Maybe some research would've been nice? Especially if your character bases a lot of her cultural identity on the city - it seems to me that the author might be better off basing her character's family on Singapore or China instead.

The narrator was fine but not great. I found her a bit emotionless, and she over-pronounced all the Chinese words, you would think she got paid more per Chinese word. We get it, you're chinese, can we move on then? It got a bit grating after a while. And it's not like she made an effort to differentiate the different character dialogues, either. No accents or any change in tone or pitch at all.
