Publisher's summary

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future...or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

I couldn’t finish it

I might try again at a different time but once the male narrator came in I couldn’t get past how he takes a breath every 3 words. I listened to 10 hours and have about 5 hours left but I’m so distracted by his narration that I’m not gonna even try to finish this book.

Will be returning to audible and trying the physical copy

I was really invested into the storyline and tried so hard to make through the audio book. As a busy mom who loves fantasy books audiobooks provide so much for me, but I could not handle how childish the narrator made the MC voice. She sounded like my 5 year old whiny. Her voice went octaves higher every time she spoke and I hoped it got better but it didn’t. She sounded so whiny and immature it took away from the character itself.

Great series starter!

This book made me empathize, made me cry, made me excited and vengeful and happy. Can’t wait to see what book 2 brings!

Don't judge by it's cover!!

I'm glad I got this, even after reading the reviews. The male narrator did take a lot of breathes but I was prepared for it, and honestly, it wasn't as awful as everyone said. The story was better than expected, and I can't wait to finish the next book!!

Pretty good

I started this series because I’d seen so many compare it to Throne of Glass. I would not say that it’s comparable to that but it is pretty good. The narrators both annoyed me, female often sounds like a whiney child and the male is very breathy, it is a good story if you can get past that.

Great Story! But the narration…

I really loved this story. Super slow start but things really start picking up about half way or so through. Credit that to it being the first novel in the series and that’s mainly used for character development and world building… the female narrator was great loved her voice and the way she told the story but the male narrator was hard to get used to. He would take these big breaths that I noticed ever single time he took them and also his upward inflection for every sentence, it was strange. But overall not a horrible experience.

GREAT book! Terrible guy narrator

The book and writing was amazing. Both epic and personal at the same time. So so good. Loved the characters and plot. The guy narrator made his parts so hard to follow though. Very clipped, breathy reading that made it hard to follow and was annoying. Otherwise 5/5 stars!

Story was amazing.. narration not as much

Like the titles says but story was great! The narration was not as good. The woman narrator made a strong ass heroine sound squeaky and the male narrator was not good. I stopped listening after he started. The amount of breaths this man took throughout his portions… oof. I would recommend the book!

Mustered through it, but wouldn’t recommend it

Listened to it cause it was one of the recommendations on a YouTube channel I watched during a dry spell of audiobooks to listen to.

The world the author built was great and I think has potential. But the story was incredibly slow and hardly any forward momentum to keep me engaged. The story of the heroine makes you want to root for her but because the story was so incredibly slow, engagement just goes flat. It didn’t pick up until chapter 54+. But I stuck through it cause I already made it that far.

Narration wise, 3 stars cause the female narrator was good. The male narrator was awful to listen to. He made sharp intakes of breath every few words like how singers do sharp intakes before belting out a note. It was like that the whole time and took away from the overall exp. Plus he narrated with such high intensity that you think he’s fighting for his life the whole time. (At some parts that’s true.)

I don’t think I will continue with the following books in the series. I gave this one a fair shot and listened until I finished to make sure I have a fair assessment of the book.
