Anna, avvocatessa impegnata, specializzata nel diritto delle acque, vorrebbe "salvare" Giovanni, sposato alla ricca Veronica. Margherita, moglie devota, assicura a Santino una vita famigliare che sembra al riparo dal sangue e dalla violenza. Ma l'edilizia, pubblica e privata, non consente trasparenze né giustizia e i due amici vengono risucchiati in una spirale senza scampo. Resistono solo i barbagli dell'adolescenza e la smagliante bellezza di Assunta, incarnazioni di una Sicilia sognata, che non smette di sognare il proprio bene.
Quello di Simonetta Agnello Hornby non è solo un romanzo su una mafia che magari non spara ma governa l'economia dell'isola, è soprattutto una storia sul potere feroce della famiglia e sul desiderio struggente di tornare alla terra in cui sono radicate identità e speranza.
Simonetta Agnello Hornby è nata a Palermo nel 1945. Cittadina italiana e britannica, vive dal 1972 a Londra, dove ha svolto la professione di avvocato dei minori ed è stata presidente dello Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. Ha esordito con La Mennulara (Feltrinelli, 2002, nuova edizione arricchita e graphic novel a cura di Massimo Fenati, 2019). Fra i suoi titoli più celebri, La zia marchesa, Boccamurata, Vento scomposto, La monaca, Il veleno dell'oleandro, Caffè amaro, Nessuno può volare, Piano nobile, Punto pieno (tutti Feltrinelli), Un filo d'olio (Sellerio) e La mia Londra (Giunti).
