Publisher's summary

From the author of the international mega-best-seller The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck comes a counterintuitive guide to the problems of hope.

We live in an interesting time. Materially, everything is the best it’s ever been - we are freer, healthier, and wealthier than any people in human history. Yet, somehow everything seems to be irreparably and horribly f*cked - the planet is warming, governments are failing, economies are collapsing, and everyone is perpetually offended on Twitter. At this moment in history, when we have access to technology, education, and communication our ancestors couldn’t even dream of, so many of us come back to an overriding feeling of hopelessness.

What’s going on? If anyone can put a name to our current malaise and help fix it, it’s Mark Manson. In 2016, Manson published The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck, a book that brilliantly gave shape to the ever-present, low-level hum of anxiety that permeates modern living. He showed us that technology had made it too easy to care about the wrong things, that our culture had convinced us that the world owed us something when it didn’t - and worst of all, that our modern and maddening urge to always find happiness only served to make us unhappier. Instead, the “subtle art” of that title turned out to be a bold challenge: to choose your struggle; to narrow and focus and find the pain you want to sustain. The result was a book that became an international phenomenon, selling millions of copies worldwide while becoming the number-one best seller in 13 different countries.

Now, in Everthing Is F*cked, Manson turns his gaze from the inevitable flaws within each individual self to the endless calamities taking place in the world around us. Drawing from the pool of psychological research on these topics, as well as the timeless wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Nietzsche, and Tom Waits, he dissects religion and politics and the uncomfortable ways they have come to resemble one another. He looks at our relationships with money, entertainment, and the internet, and how too much of a good thing can psychologically eat us alive. He openly defies our definitions of faith, happiness, freedom - and even of hope itself.

With his usual mix of erudition and where-the-f*ck-did-that-come-from humor, Manson takes us by the collar and challenges us to be more honest with ourselves and connected with the world in ways we probably haven’t considered before. It’s another counterintuitive romp through the pain in our hearts and the stress of our soul. One of the great modern writers has produced another book that will set the agenda for years to come.

Editorial Review

Stoicism and toughing it out are definitely thematic trends in self development these days, so it’s super refreshing to hear a pivotal writer in the genre advocate the importance of feelings—especially because Manson cleverly slips in the message beneath a veneer of cool, occasionally cuss-y apathy. His acerbic prose and in-your-face analogies belie the absolute necessity of emotional acknowledgement when it comes to motivation. Manson lays out a convincing case that emotions and logic serve specific roles in getting yourself to do what you want—and an over or underbalance of either is a surefire way to fall into the pits of hopelessness. Full of laughs and insightful parables, this is the perfect listen to gift to the feeling-averse (or highly illogical) friend in your life. —Sean T., Audible Editor

A few nugget are worth the read

You read a book like this for a better understanding of yourself and the world around. If you already ready a ton of book dealing with existentialism, nature of humanity etc. then you will there are about 5 or so key epiphany perspectives. I will be adding a few of these nuggets to my manual. Worth.

If you are seeking new knowledge you will not receive it. Kant and neitcha already covered this. However the perspective is a modern perspective with practical applications. Having a teacher you can understand and relate to is just as important as content

Very Enjoyable and Entertaining

I liked this one a lot. It is fairly more philosophical, but Mark breaks it down for those not versed in philosophy. Overall, enjoyable read with his characteristic and hilarious sarcasm replicated in this book as well.

A Wakeup Call

Some perspective is given to our actions , worldview hopes and dreams. Very worthwhile. This understanding of why we act the way we do was enlightening to me. It spoke to me as a sobering insight to how we got to where we are as humans and were we most likely be heading.

EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT NOW, but in an alright way

Wow...I mean really...w0w...I don't look at anyone or anything the same after listening to this in its entirety. It was actually hard for me to listen to towards the middle and took me a while to finish but it was totally worth it. I thought I had things figured out and my approach to life was the best it could be and this audio book broke a lot of that down which was depressing. In addition to that the abandoning "hope" is difficult, especially in justifying life's curveballs and traumatic events...but really this book taught me ultimately to BE A BETTER PERSON and to do things not for personal gain, but because they are RIGHT...and in the end, you will be happier if you are an adult balancing your feeling brain with your thinking brain. Also to appreciate life while it lasts...that is the biggest thing...you have to be really mature to take the author's advice but I believe it to be right and if more people heard this there would be less exploitation and bad behaviour amongst human beings. This really is a trip...I enjoyed the author's ability to tie in mindfulness and use history to help us understand why human beings are always using religions to control one another (traditional faiths, attachments to sports teams, and even personal relationships can all be applicable as religions). Also an interesting piece on how to look at the future, coming quicker than you think. I would love to look into more from this author and others like him...GLHF!

The Curse words are just a bonus

Filled with interesting tidbits about the human minds, it's capabilities and tendencies, and human behaviors, this book is a very stimulating adventure into human consciousness and why we do what we do.

It’s All in The Title

The last chapter is by far my favorite. Every word resounds with relevancy, and I too now hope for all the things the author mentions.
