Publisher's summary
In the back of Adam Farmer's mind, he always knew there was something not quite right about his family. It was more than just the fact that his dad seemed to be stoically going through the motions or that his sad-eyed mother spent most of her time in her room. Somewhere in the recesses of Adam's memory, he recalled a frantic journey in the middle of the night, hurried like criminals onto a bus, staring out the windows at some dark, malevolent thing none of them could see. Then one day Adam discovers his birth certificates - two of them - among his father's papers, and the first missing piece of the puzzle slides ominously into place.
Award-winning author for young adults Robert Cormier creates tales that help young adults grow and find their places in society. Narrators Jeff Woodman and John Randolph Jones bring a boy's desperate search for the truth vividly to life.

"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

When an industrial accident unleashes an "airborne toxic event", a lethal black chemical cloud floats over the Gladneys' lives.
