Publisher's summary

EMP blasts started the apocalypse during Tom and his family's return flight to San Francisco from Hawaii. Surviving the crash only caused them to confront the chaos of the apocalypse head-on. Their fellow survivors were helpless and lacked the skills to survive. Tom, his sister, and their grandma survive the perilous trip from San Francisco to their ranch in Southern Oregon using their prepper skills to keep them alive during the anarchy around them. They continue to lead a small band of friends through the chaos and anarchy that has shattered their world.

Good Story! Rushed Ending

It was a good story but felt a bit rushed! Dont know if the author got bored or was trying to hit a time constraint!

Not surprised at all

It’s an alright story…. I am not surprised by the cartels running things when SHTF or the drug running. It is good to read that the main family lived… loved their multiple places and setups as well.

Another good post apocalyptic story by AJ Newman

This is my 2nd series read by Newman. Rating would have been higher but I find the narrator’s intonation really annoying most of the time, especially in the first book.
The story line is good, and I could hear a lot of similar themes and ideas from his other series. There is definitely the need for “suspension of disbelief” by the listener, but there is always going to be that with most fiction. A lot less than what is needed watching most overly CGI thriller movies nowadays!

Don’t let the bad reviews scare you. Good listen.

I saw a lot of negative comments on this book and was not sure about listening to it. I am glad I took the chance. Yes some of the story was no where near reality but it is just a book.
You can learn some things about prepping from it but that is not what it is for. It is entertainment not a how to book.
The narrator did a better than expected job. Sometimes he was hard to follow when a bunch of people were involved in something but in the long run he did great.

Meh…

A little stilted in the narration, and a little predictable and simplistic in the story, but I paid for it, so I finished it…

Meh

This wasn't a bad story. I listened to the whole thing, but was annoyed pretty much the whole time. The narration is really not good. Easy going conversations seemed stilted. And the 64 year old "granny" sounds like a 90 year old! WTH? I'm also not crazy about the way he made most of the women sound horrible. That said, while the story is pretty far fetched, it held my interest enough to finish it. Purchase at your own risk.

AJ Newman Has Outdone Himself

I want this in print and on audio cd so it can be read/listened to when TEOTWAWKI actually happens. First post apocalyptic prepper book about Northern California and Southern Oregon where the author doesn't just write us off by having the Chinese vs Mexican cartels literally cause sooo much destruction that the rest of the Country nukes us. FEMA isn't here...which seems extremely likely to me not to happen. I think FEMA would get stuck between East Coast, Florida, Texas and Midwest. Cartels are already here coming across the border and I could see racist groups formed in prisons being a real problem because of current politics. The group starts out being mostly regular folk without preparation hooking up with a family that has prepared well. Both males and females are strong capable characters bringing skills to the table. There's romance, kept pretty clean, marriages, spies, collaborators and learning of survival skills. The story is much more based, like what actually did happen in previous world wars.

Three main things I thought could be better though...#1 adding a couple skilled doctor/surgeon to the group or at the very least a well trained veterinarian. #2 Winter planting...several above ground planters could have been put into 1 of the cave rooms that were large, had access to the interior stream and had lots of natural light coming in. The story had incidents of finding seeds in mylar bags so setting up a small green house using winter seeds or even "no till" winter seeds. These come in 10-50lb seed bags and would have caused fresh food growth, especially because of how they chose to save some livestock. #3 Please add some Black patriots like me and my military son to your characters. I'm disabled but learned and can even teach Krav Maga. What's often surprising is how easily a walker or cane can be used to fight. Walkers can be utilized to help bring in loads and I do lots with herbal salves, tinctures and homeopathic remedies. Like Granny B I have that "I'm momma so you better behave air" and I sing. A character like mine could run bee hives🤷🏾👩🏾‍⚕️ and be smart aleck enough to keep everyone laughing... keeping people's spirits up and able to comfort along with discipline.

Long and the short of it, AJ Newman outdid himself. I own an Audible copy...now I want the whole series in print and audio cd. Well done!!🥳

Decent read.

I guess being willing to kill is a prerequisite to be in this group so there is that.
