First appearing in print in 1890, the character of Sherlock Holmes has now become synonymous worldwide with the concept of a super sleuth. His creator, Conan Doyle, imbued his detective hero with intellectual power, acute observational abilities, a penchant for deductive reasoning and a highly educated use of forensic skills. Indeed, Doyle created the first fictional private detective who used what we now recognize as modern scientific investigative techniques.

Doyle ended up writing four novels and 56 short stories featuring Holmes and his companion, Dr. Watson. All but four are told in the first person by Watson, two by Holmes, and two are written in the third person. Together, this series of beautifully written Victorian literature has sold more copies than any other books in the English language, with the exceptions of the Bible and Shakespeare.

Volume 1 in this series consists of two novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four, followed by a collection of short stories entitled The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

excellent classic and excellent narrator

I really enjoyed this. Many great Sherlock Holmes mysteries. First one didn't do it for me and I thought I wouldn't enjoy it but after that, all good. Perfect Narrator for this.

Great adventures, great mysteries!!

Old school Holmes at its best!! Some of the stories are better than the others you just have to keep listening!! But overall great short stories that you never see coming try to figure them out!! You will enjoy it!!!!

Good Stories and Old Bigotry!

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1?

Sir Arthur Doyle is the Shakespeare of detective writing. He is amazing and brilliant!

One thing disappointing me was the jarring bigotry of his writing about the Mormons. I know at the time of his writing there was a lot of misunderstanding and wildly inaccurate stories going around about the Mormons in Utah. So I will cut him some slack on that issue. These outrageous stories have been disputed and long ago put to rest by historians. Still it was troubling to see them once again showcased in print.

The classic thriller

The classic stories...no technological gadgets or Hollywood stars...just logic and wit. It is interesting to listen to these classic stories from a century ago and hear the vices and issues recognizing how little some things change and how some areas where we have become more open and others more closed.

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1?

The mystery! I enjoyed how the first stories are longer more like short books but then Sherlock becomes short stories. I love the way the author describes Sherlock's thought process. I find myself trying to be led by the evidence in my everyday life now. All and all, I had previously tried to read Connan Doyle before but the writing style had me putting down the book and not returning. This brought the characters to life partially due to the performance, but I feel that sometimes hearing older English is easier for my brain to process than reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone

Love Sherlock Holmes!!!

Love all the stories. This was an amazing book first and foremost. Next, the narrator did a superb job. Listening to books is like my oxygen. This was just another winner on Audible.

Faithful and uncluttered

The Holmes stories have been done and re-done many times. In recent years there has been a trend to "spice up" the stories with mixed results. Fortunately this series is straightforward and faithful. The readings are not overly dramatic, just the right amount. Particularly nice is the opening history of Dr. Watson-something that is not commonly read or presented.

I was hesitant going into the series, i wasn't sure if i would enjoy these short stories and really wasn't sure what to expect. With that said i am truly glad i did. I listened to Volume I,II, and III. All the short stories are interesting and enjoyable. They also help you get a good mental picture of the era. The only two minor complaints i have that is i truly wish Sir Doyle gave you small clues along the way that let you be able to attempt to solve the mystery before Holmes did. I felt the guilty culprit came out of left field, and i wish these stories were in chronological order of Holmes life, and not when Doyle wrote them. With that said neither would stop me from recommending these books or listening to them again, which i already have.

What did you love best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes, Volume 1?

I read all these stories when I was about 18 and loved them then. They do a great job with the audio version. The story telling is great and the guy does Holmes and Watson very well. I enjoy listening to the vocabulary and the tone of their speaking - what gentlemen! Highly recommended.

Yes I have - generally when I get an audio book and see that Charlton Griffin is readng then I am assured it will be a good listen.
