Publisher's summary

Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He's short, he's fast, he's got a ton of potential - and he's the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as the Butcher.

Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile, and he doesn't need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny, and the truth will get him killed.

But Neil's not the only one with secrets on the team. One of Neil's new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can't walk away from him a second time.

Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he's finally found someone and something worth fighting for.

Great Story, Bearable Narrator

This book is a wild ride and hits every genre. The characters are 3 dimensional and come off as real people who are ruled by their emotions. The story is deep and surprising, never seeming to dull. The narrator was a bit of a rollercoaster. He seemed to stumble over the voices in the beginning, making all the male characters indistinguishable in their gruffness. However, it improved as the book went on. The female characters had a similar problem when they were first introduced as well, although he never quite got out of the nasally prissy tone he used for all of them. Overall an amazing book with a bearable narrator. That could just be my bias though as this is one of my favorite book series. Definitely give it a try if you aren't or dont have time to actually read it.

Dark Undertones with Broken Teammates

I really was not sure what to think about this book prior to reading, and I still am not sure what to think. I think my main takeaway is the character and world building were very good. I was definitely invested from the very beginning and still am. I do not feel the need to burn through the next two reads though, and think I will let this one settle a bit before going back. The thing about this book is there is a ton of dark undertones. Like there are not a lot of dark scenes, but the dark undertones are there in spades. Neil is a great character, he is strong, fierce, fearful but always stands up for what he believes is right. There were some problematic scenes in the book, but I think it went with the story as far as these broken boys go. And they are all broken in one way or another as well as the girls in the story as well, and really they are all adults, but they all had to grow up way to fast. Also, Coach Wymack is a great character and he was what this team needed. I love Alexander Cendese and thought he did a phenomenal job with this narration. Will definitely be finishing this series.

This is a perfect series!

It is very important to understand you cant listen to just one book, you have to listen to it all or you will not enjoy it. The story is dificult to read, rape, violance, drugs, alcohol, murder. It has to come with a trigger warning,i was not prepered.
This is one of the best stories I read,.

Andrew, haha.

I feel like Andrew is the main reason I’m stuck on this story. Something so fascinating about the fear a 5 foot blonde can instill in… well… everyone. Can’t wait for more!

I loved it!!!

I really enjoyed the audiobook but the girls voices all looked the same and Nicky is to straight for my tastes , I was hoping he was more sassy , but I enjoy the entire book, is the 5th time that I read this book, I’m so passionate about this trilogy, the foxes and especially Neil and Andrew , the scene on Kathy’s talk show was AMAZING, Neil is perfect and Andrew is Crazy but we love him like that! I can’t wait for the second book

A character study

A friend of mine recommended this book series to me so I bought the whole series on kindle (it was a great deal!), but now its on Audible! Started this book on a long commute and was not disappointed. It started slow but never boring. We are getting to know Neil who has much to hide. He been running for 10 years and has to lie low, so why is he thrust into a high profile sport, and the limelight??? I suppose that we will find out. All we really know is he loves the sport Exy. The story mostly focuses on Neil, Andrew and Kevin, but the whole team is a band of misfits with a Coach willing to give 2nd and 4th chances. They are last in their league. They have a lot to prove....especially with he Edgar Allen Ravens (the best in their league) causing a lot of grief. It’s a sinister kind, not just sportsman-like bullying. It’s much deeper, and Kevin and Neil are the ones with targets on their backs. But Andrew has their backs. The ending ramped up quickly and we are left with a semi-cliffy. I have the book, but I am itching to get the 2nd audiobook The Raven King! Well done. The narrator was good, tho his impersonation of women left something to be desired, and Andrew sounded kinda like a surfer dude.

5 stars every time I listen

This is the 4th time I’ve listen to this book in 2021 and I fall in love with the characters more and more each time. This series will always hold a special place in my heart. If you are reading this review and unsure if you should listen to this book. I say do it! Take the chance and maybe you’ll fall in love with the characters just as much as I did. I’ll be honest though. There are some situations in this series that may cause triggers. I highly recommend reaching out to someone who has read this book/series first of you are easily triggered.
