In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

When South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand, his common sense told him to refuse. But he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom.

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Resumen del Editor
An extraordinary story of a girl, her grandfather, and one of nature’s most mysterious and beguiling creatures: the honeybee.
Meredith May recalls the first time a honeybee crawled on her arm. She was five years old, her parents had recently split, and suddenly, she found herself in the care of her grandfather, an eccentric beekeeper who made honey in a rusty old military bus in the yard. That first close encounter was at once terrifying and exhilarating for May, and in that moment, she discovered that everything she needed to know about life and family was right before her eyes, in the secret world of bees.
May turned to her grandfather and the art of beekeeping as an escape from her troubled reality. Her mother had receded into a volatile cycle of neurosis and despair and spent most days locked away in the bedroom. It was during this pivotal time in May’s childhood that she learned to take care of herself, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather, and opened her eyes to the magic and wisdom of nature.
The bees became a guiding force in May’s life, teaching her about family and community, loyalty and survival, and the unequivocal relationship between a mother and her child. Part memoir, part beekeeping odyssey, The Honey Bus is an unforgettable story about finding home in the most unusual of places and how a tiny, little-understood insect could save a life.

Everything about 15-year-old Cat's new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena's orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts - first drink, first cigarette, first kiss - while Marlena's habits harden and calcify.

This powerful and haunting memoir details the years Paula McLain and her two sisters spent as foster children after being abandoned by both parents in California in the early 1970s. As wards of the State, the sisters spent the next 14 years moving from foster home to foster home. The dislocations, confusions, and odd pleasures of an unrooted life form the basis of one of the most compelling memoirs in recent years - a book in the tradition of Jo Ann Beard's The Boys of My Youth and Mary Karr's The Liars' Club.

When we last saw Zippy, she was oblivious to the storm that was brewing in her home. Her mother, Delonda, had literally just gotten up off the couch and ridden her rickety bicycle down the road. Her dad was off somewhere, gambling or "working." And Zippy was lost in her own fabulous world of exploring the fringes of Moorland, Indiana.

Good in every way
Really enjoyed every aspect of this story-from learning about bees to this woman's resilience. I was considering getting bees until I listened to this... This book is suitable for all ages.

Lovely story of coming of age
Unlike other reviews I enjoyed the narrator. It was nice departure from other Audible Books. Story of beekeeping was educational but I had a difficult time accepting the interaction of mother and daughter at time of college. It seemed the mother daughter relationship was awkwardly written and rushed towards the end of the book.

An amazing story of loss and unconditional love
I couldn’t stop reading this book and when it ended I wanted more! A memoir of a young girl with deep emotions from a family torn apart, ultimately having to deal with a clinically depressed mother. Her grandfather saved her simply by involving her in his passion for beekeeping. Beautifully told. Unforgettable!

Amazing story
I loved this book! I started my 1st beehive when I was 12 and the word pictures in the book at just beautiful. I could see myself learing the same things Meridith learns about honeybees. Her story is beautiful and tragic and I loved every second of this book!

Life Dependent on This Story
I read most novels I see based on the life of bees. THE KEEPER OF THE BEES by Gene Stratton-Porter was my first. Life lessons taught by bees and those who care for them are invaluable. Our source of food lies in their existence. We must learn their life lessons for us and for the continuance of mankind. It rivals stories of survival and mystery. This story will awaken curiosity of the mind and drama of the soul. It awakens the essence of life itself

Really enjoyed this
In fact I listened to it twice in a row and will listen again! I am a backyard beekeeper and the product of a broken family. Both aspects of the story resonate with me. The bee information is accurate, and it is a good depiction of how and why the bees are so important to me. Wonderful story and great performance

A wonderful, memorable story
I loved this book. I am a beekeeper, and much of the information and emotions about honeybees resonated with me. But beyond that, a heartbreaking and poignant tale about the effects of a divorce on a young girl, and how, using bees as a metaphor, she learns how to navigate life. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Heartbreaking and empowering
It is amazing to see what us as humans can overcome, and the lessons we can learn from nature if we take the time to listen and learn.
