Story
Beneath the surface a war rages between the surviving demons still inhabiting the Earth and those few, the initiated, who fight to keep it buried deep where it belongs in the darkest shadows. Troy Odell was doing what he did best, taking the fight to the enemies of the free world. No two missions were ever the same, but he never expected his world to turn so violently upside down as it did. The only surviving member of his team of US Marine Raiders, he finds himself drawn into that secret battle.

The year is 1989. America has just invaded Noriega's Panama. And Specialist Bennett's platoon of Cav Scouts are in country… with, frankly, not a whole lot to do. Until a freak rainstorm somehow transports the entire platoon—Humvees, weapons, and all—to another world. A world controlled by a wicked Aztec god. The Land of the Black Sun. In a heartbeat, the Scouts find themselves fighting for their lives against savage beasts, witches, zombies, subhuman tribes seeking sacrifices… and even themselves.

Something to root for
I thought the character development from an angry and struggling vet to the man able to show great care for an unlikely friend really keeps you invested and rooting for his success. I like the variety of story, with some drama, sci-fi space travel, survival, etc., as well as the twists the story goes through.

Relatable Sci-Fi story
The book is well written and gives a relatable look at the invisible struggle that plagues service members (current and former) suffer from. The author did a great job balancing telling a story embedded with reality all while dropping some very familiar and laugh provoking military phrases.

Great Addition to Indie Sci-fi
Great book. Definitely improves my opinion of Indie Sci-fi. Don't skip if you like military sub-genre. And, I thought it was more realistic FPP than the Halo series, if you like tragedies.
I'm glad I listened to the audiobook. Clearly Dawson is invested in a great narrator for his debut novel.

Gritty, emotional & captivating!
The journey of the protagonist as he processes his emotions following his return home and across the solar systems feels raw and compelling. It made me wonder about veteran's and the challenges they face upon their returns. The story itself with the Commander journeying through space is full of excitement and at time's humor. A great read with appeal to those outside of Sci Fi and definitely for those who are science fiction fans!
