Story
Across Italy there are many half-empty towns, nearly abandoned by those who migrate to the coast or to cities. The beautiful, crumbling hilltop town of Becchina is among them, but its mayor has taken drastic measures to rebuild―selling abandoned homes to anyone in the world for a single Euro, as long as the buyer promises to live there for at least five years. It’s a no-brainer for American couple Tommy and Kate Puglisi. Both work remotely, and Becchina is the home of Tommy’s grandparents, his closest living relatives.

The red night of bells heralds global catastrophe. Annihilation on a biblical scale. Seeing the morning is no blessing. An occupying force intent on erasing the remnants of animal life from the planet. Across the deserted landscapes of England, bereft of infrastructure and society, the overlooked can either hide or try to outrun the infernal hunting terrors. Story
When two marines and their corpsman reunite after a decade apart, they find themselves caught up in the mystery of their former squad leader’s disappearance. With little more to go on than a handful of disturbing charcoal sketches and the whispers of a local legend, they plunge into the depths of one of America’s last truly wild places. But the trees themselves begin to whisper dark secrets. Secrets of trafficking and violence. Of rotten science and blood. Of something else that lurks in the shadows of the pines—something ancient, savage, and hungry.

Story
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Sisters Anna and Jennie live in a historic bungalow on the Chicago River. They’re tethered to a disquieting past, and with nowhere else to go, nothing can part them from their family home. Not the maddening creaks and disembodied voices that rattle the old walls. Not the inexplicable drownings in the area, or the increasing number of bodies that float by Anna’s window. To stave off loneliness, Anna has a podcast, spinning ghostly tales of Chicago’s tragic history. But when Anna captures the attention of an ardent male listener, she awakens to the possibilities of a world outside.

That's about to change with the words any New Yorker would love to hear—affordable housing lottery. They've won an apartment in the Deptford, one of Manhattan's most revered buildings. Take only pictures. Leave only bones.
This trip is going to be Dylan’s big break. Her geologist friend Clay has discovered an untouched cliff face in the Kentucky wilderness, and she is going to be the first person to climb it. Together with Clay, his research assistant Sylvia, and Dylan’s boyfriend Luke, Dylan is going to document her achievement on Instagram and finally cement her place as the next rising star in rock climbing.
Seven months later, three bodies are discovered in the trees just off the highway. All are in various states of decay: one a stark, white skeleton; the second emptied of its organs; and the third a mutilated corpse with the tongue, eyes, ears, and fingers removed.
But Dylan is still missing—and no trace of her, dead or alive, has been discovered.
Were the climbers murdered? Did they succumb to cannibalism? Or are their impossible bodies the work of an even more sinister force?
This dread-inducing debut builds to a bloodcurdling climax, and will leave you shocked by the final twist.

When Dietrich investigates a brutal mob hit the brass doesn’t want him to solve, he goes from phoning it in to getting in over his head. Caught up in a mysterious second homicide with an even more perplexing perpetrator, Dietrich starts to second guess his instincts—and his memory—as he searches for answers at the bottom of a bottle.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Pera Sinclair was nine the day the pilot intentionally crashed his plane into her family's grand home, killing everyone inside. She was the girl who survived the tragedy, a sympathetic oddity, growing stranger by the day. Over the decades she rebuilt the huge and rambling building on the original site, recreating what she had lost, each room telling a piece of the story of her life and that of the many people who died, both before and after the disaster. And while she doesn't believe in ghosts, she's not above telling a ghost story or two to those who come to visit Sinclair House.

More of a thriller.
If you enjoy stories about doomed excursions, wilderness thrillers, malicious spirits and A24 vibes, this may well be your book. There is a rising feeling of hopelessness, the deeper in to the novel you get, with the reader aware well before the characters that nothing good is waiting for them in the woods. Will I read it again? Possibly, as a lazy comfort read. Would I recommend it to seasoned horror fans? Probably not; it's fairly tame. I might, however, recommend it as a starter novel for people who want to get into horror but aren't sure what their spooky tolerance level is.
The good: if you like monster movie casts (a walking buffet for the plot to dispatch in a series of gory and graphic ends?) Check. You get four characters with enough surface-level development to be invested in whether they live or die. If isolation as a horror element interests you? Check. The backdrop to this story is, itself, creepy and not a place I'd be in a hurry to spend a night in, and the further the novel goes, the more claustrophobic the environment becomes.
The not-so good: I've seen this title compared to 'The Ruins' and while I agree that I'd likely keep them on the same shelf, I was disappointed to find it somewhat toothless in its horror element. I picked it up hoping for spine tingling, page-turning chills and thrills, and the story just didn't get me there. There are definitely creepy moments, but not the 'dread inducing horror' I'd heard advertised about it. I also found the nature of the 'monster / entity' to be inconsistent and unclear. By the end I had more questions than answers, but because the novel failed to really engage me, I didn't really care that I didn't get those answers. I felt like the story was setting something up and the conclusion felt weak underdeveloped. I didn't get the sense that the author was confident about what they wanted it to all mean.

Haunted forest!
This story is wild! It started off slow but once the group of 4 got to the forest, the story takes off at a faster pace. Told from many POVs and in alternating timelines, each character’s experience was creepy and terrifying. There were some gory scenes straight out of a zombie movie but it was fantastic! Megan Tusing did an incredible job narrating with all the different characters, her voices for each were distinguishable. Kudos to her!

Ready to have nightmares??
I love camping. I love going out into nature and getting lost for a bit…but now I’m not so sure.
What a friggin debut novel, truly terrifying and the pace is just perfect. The descent into madness feels slow at first but there were clues all along the way. The last third of the book is horrifying and so good. Gave me nightmares for sure! Bravo Jenny Kiefer.

great story, narrator needs work
the narrator kind of ruined this book for me. I feel like a could have been a great horror novel, however there was hardly any change to the emotions in her voice, no ominous, or fear inducing tone. the scary scenes blended into the other scenes to seamlessly that you didn't even know it was supposed to be a scary scene in the book. I feel I would have enjoyed this title more if I had read it myself with no narration.

Solid
trengths:
- Good opening
- interesting premise (climbers trapped in a remote area, getting stuck in a loop of sorts)
- concise writing style
- strong moments of horror (including body-horror)
Things that didn't work for me:
- characters: on the flatter side, unlikable (except for the dog)
- uneven pacing
- the resolution; I understand why some will love it, but it felt slightly too gory. I guess I prefer my horror subtler :)
In all, a solid horror read inspired by the Dyatlow Pass mystery.
